Kyron Horman has gone from tragic missing-boy case to tabloid sideshow
Anna Griffin, The Oregonian

Six weeks after Kyron Horman disappeared, we still have no clue where the little boy went or whether he's alive.

Certain things have become clear, though. The fact, for example, that there is only one truly innocent victim in this mess.

Two if you count Kyron's baby sister.

This began as a sad, terrifying story about a boy who vanished. It has devolved into a domestic dispute, admittedly one with enough juicy detail to attract People magazine and the major TV networks.

Despite almost a half-million dollars spent on the search by Multnomah County taxpayers, we know only the barest details of Kyron's last morning at home. Despite countless hours of TV time and newsprint pages, we know little about the boy, beyond that he's allergic to bees, has a birthmark on his forehead and loves sushi.

We know plenty, however, about Terri and Kaine Horman's failed marriage, their gym habits, his claims she suffered from severe postpartum depression. We know biological mother Desiree Young says she suspected the worst of her former husband's new wife even before Kyron disappeared.

"K. and I have not discussed any of this yet," he wrote. "She can't quite talk just yet and would not be able to understand verbally what is happening yet. I am providing her with as much love, routine, and support that I possibly can."

Unusual events, nature of disappearance keep Kyron Horman saga in national spotlight
Published: Saturday, July 17, 2010, 9:30 AM

More than a dozen journalists turned up even for a routine closed-door meeting outside a judge's chambers. A People magazine reporter has camped out in Portland for weeks. Websites devoted to the case have popped up all over the Internet. And reader comments to online stories have soared into the thousands.

All the media attention has not brought Kyron home but it could help, experts say.

"The media generate awareness," said Allen, head of the missing child group. "They generate leads."

But stories also fuel wild speculation, comments and rumors on the Internet.

"There's good and bad," said Scott, the undersheriff for the Grays Harbor County. "It creates a lot of false leads and rumors in the community that have to be sorted through. But the good outweighs the bad by keeping the case alive for the public."

And yet the intense spotlight can be difficult for the family, with stakeouts and their every move captured by the media.

Terri out, Kaine and K. back in family's NW home

A car loaded with Terri Horman’s belongings zipped from the wooded drive just before 6 p.m. Friday evening. In the back seat were a small stack of boxes.

On Friday, Kaine Horman and his estranged wife came to an agreement for Terri to move out of the former family home in NW Portland by 3 p.m. Saturday, but a source tells KGW Teri Horman has already moved out and has returned to Roseburg, where she attended high school and where her parents still live.

As Terri's belongings were taken from the Horman home, Kyron's mother and father were visiting the 'wall of hope' at Skyline school.

Meanwhile, back in his Northwest Portland home for a day, Kyron's dad Kaine tells NewsChannel 8 he's preparing the missing seven-year-old's bedroom for an eventual return. Kyron disappeared from Skyline Elementary on June 4.

By "getting Kyron's room adjusted for all of the wall of hope notes and items, I think he will be really overwhelmed by everything that everyone has done for him," Kaine Horman said via electronic communication.

Terri Horman has two lawyers in Portland now.

Stephen Houze is her attorney in the Kyron case. Attorney Peter Bunch is handling her divorce with Kaine.
