SAN DIEGO — The Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help in finding a 47-year-old Rancho San Diego man who has been missing since the end of June.
Steven Bruce Smith was reported missing July 12 by his family, who said they had not seen him since June 30, sheriff’s officials said. Relatives told deputies that Smith had a gun and was possibly suicidal.
His 2001 dark blue Ford XLT was found unoccupied and inoperable parked on the Pine Valley Bridge by the California Highway Patrol on July 8 about 2:30 a.m., the sheriff’s department said. Based on damage to the undercarriage, investigators believe that it had been driven off-road for some time.
Cell phone records indicate that Smith had been in the Pine Valley area southeast of Interstate 8, officials said. Sheriff’s deputies conducted extensive searches under and around the Pine Valley Bridge.
Smith is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, 170 pounds with reddish brown hair, a mustache, goatee and blue eyes.
Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at (858) 565-5200.
