Missing Silver Springs Woman
Reporter: Staff
Email Address: news@kolotv.com

RENO, NV - The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is searching for elderly woman who disappeared sometime after July 22nd. The woman’s grandson was arrested Sunday in Sacramento. He was found driving her car and had her credit cards and a backpack full of her jewelry.

Peggy Herlacher was fist discovered to be missing on July 24th after her daughter called the LCSO to check in on her. Herlacher is 73-years-old, described as being in poor health and rarely leave her Silver Springs home. The daughter also told sheriff’s deputies that Herlacher’s grandson, James Masterson, had been living with Herlacher for the last couple of weeks.

The daughter had heard Masterson had taken Herlacher’s car to go to a family wedding in Modesto, CA. The daughter said that Herlacher would never loan out her car, nor was there any family wedding in California.

A search of Herlacher’s residence showed nothing out of the ordinary. The daughter helped deputies note that Herlacher’s purse, personal blanket, and pillow were missing. She also pointed out that all of her mother’s jewelry had been taken.

On July 25th, Masterson was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol in Sacramento driving Herlacher’s car. He was in possession of his grandmother’s credit cars and had a backpack full of her jewelry. He refused to answer any questions regarding the whereabouts of his grandmother.

Masterson is currently being held in the Sacramento County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the disappearance of Peggy Herlacher; they believe that James Masterson is involved due to his suspicious activities.

If anyone has any information they are urged to call the LCSO at 775-463-6620, Secret Witness at 775-322-4900, or Lt Ortiz or Lt. Veil at 775-577-5023.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office needs your help finding an elderly woman who went missing last week. They do have a person of interest, the woman's grandson. And authorities tell us he is in a Sacramento jail Monday night.

Lyon County Investigators say there are a number of things that point to him somehow being involved. Meanwhile, neighbors are shocked this would happen next door.

Poor Peggy - I fear the worst for her. Her grandson appears to be a real bad apple --- some investigation into his past is in order. Local reports here, are not getting much response because Peggy was a "shut in" --- she did not get out and about much at all and so many people did not know her personally.

What may make her case difficult, is the area - Silver Springs is very rural. It is not a suburb by any means, of a larger metro area.
It is surrounded by desert with Lake Lahontan to the east, and so searching for her is going to be much more than usual. It will require horse/rider teams as that area surrounding is not "foot friendly" and parts of it are inaccessible to vehicles.
Here is a satellite view of the area of Silver Springs:

The town itself is small, about 4,000 people.

Still keeping my ears and eyes open for updates on this poor lady. The grandson is refusing to talk without an attorney. So sad.

A missing Silver Springs woman's grandson will be tried on charges connected to her disappearance, a Sacramento judge determined Tuesday.

Sacramento Deputy District Attorney Kerry Blackburn said a hearing Tuesday determined there was enough evidence to try James Masterson, 22, on felony charges of auto theft and possession of a stolen vehicle, heroin and stolen credit cards.

The investigation continues into the July 24 disappearance of a Silver Springs grandmother.

According to Lyon County Sheriff's Lt. Brian Veil, investigators are in Modesto interviewing family members of Peggy Herlacher, 73, last heard from on July 22 when she spoke with a family friend. Her family reported her missing on July 24.

My heart goes out to this Daughter and her Husband.

How very disheartening to have no one show up to help you search for your loved one.

My Prayers to the family.

We're working to learn more about the discovery of Peggy Herlacher's body.

Tuesday night, Lyon County Sheriff's confirmed her body had been found but wouldn't release any other details

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Rest in Peace Peggy.

I saw this on the local Reno news yesterday. So sad. I truly believe that after they do the autopsy, the grandson will be indicted.

My heart cries for Peggy, her daughter and her husband. I had heard that no one showed up to help search and I think a lot of that was the local sheriff's office just plain, dropping the ball. In general, due to the unusually high population per capita of former felons in Silver Springs, that sheriff's department is unusually well trained for a town so small. They get a lot of practice. It really surprised me when I heard no one had shown up. I really think it was a mis-communication/and simple human error on that.

Anyway, we are sad about Peggy. She was apparently a fine woman, with a deep love for God, and charity toward the few who knew her well.

God bless you Peggy. Resquiat in Pace. (Rest in Peace) Pax Christi (peace of Christ on you)

R.
