    From Patience's link above:
    Ground search called off

The ground search has since been called off and the RNC major crime unit has become involved in the investigation.

The RNC has recently received a tip from the public that someone matching Shirran’s description has been spotted on the west coast of Newfoundland.
“Something obviously has happened to her. She’s not gone by choice, I personally don’t feel that way.”

Much of this belief revolves around the fact that Shirran has a son, Moses, who recently turned one and who is loved very deeply by his mother.

“She would not leave him,” Follett said. “Every couple of weeks she’d be sending new pictures of him and that sort of thing. She dearly loves him.”

How could she just disappear from her home? Any signs of break-in? Who last saw her? Was her son at home at the time? So many questions!

Ground search suspended for missing woman
Volunteers and police had been searching trails, a wooded area and a pond near her home in the Kilbride area of St. John's. The search had extended to the Bowring Park area.

In appealing for public help in the case this weekend, the RNC disclosed that some residents might know Shirran better as Ann Marie Baggs, the name she had until about six years ago.

My impression of Newfoundland is that it's sparsely populated enough that "everyone knows everyone." That's only my impression from a couple thousand miles away. Is that close to accurate? And wouldn't that make it difficult for someone to disappear, unlike in a major metro area like Toronto or New York City?

What's going on in Canada?. There is quite a few missing people on the board. I don't know how far apart they all are, but it's strange.

The city of St John's where this lady is missing from has a population of over 175,000.

The whole population of Newfoundland and Labrador is over 500,00. but it is sparcely populated. and there are many small towns and villages so everyone does not everyone else....LOL

If it was a state in the USA then it would be the 4th largest state behind
    Alaska, Texas and California

I don't think there has been a large increase in people missing in Canada.

The reason I think there are more Canadians who are now members of WS

    reporting these cases

so that is why it seems like an increase in missing people.

Ann Shirran, who used to write a very biting and hard hitting column for the Algoma News has gone missing from her residence in St. John's, Newfoundland. Both Ann and her sister Cheryl Therrien used to live in Wawa, until they moved to Newfoundland.
    http://www.wawa-news.com/index.php?o...659&Itemid=113

Wawa is in Northern Ontario. Not sure how long Ann has been in Newfoundland. There is a facebook group setup to help find Ann:

    http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...5869039&v=info

It sounds like she left her home around 10pm with just her purse to go for a walk and didn't return.

    Personal observations:
I have been in Newfoundland as recently as last December - there is no way off that island other than air or sea. It is a rock - all rock and water. I don't think there would be anyway to hide on any part of Newfoundland - especially if you are 6 feet tall with reddish/auburn hair. Ann would most certainly stand out in any crowd in Newfoundland. I have been in Newfoundland several times on business and most of the women there would be about 5'6'' to 5'8'' on average - Ann would stand out. Most folks in Newfoundland are from Irish descent. Historical note: Marconi sent the first radio signal from Signal Hill, Newfoundland - this is in St. John's (the area that Ann went missing from) - it is all hills, rocks and water. Beautiful but many, many places in and around St. John's that would be hard to investigate.

    Come home soon Ann.

Search for woman moves deep into Goulds
    Published on July 26th, 2010

The search for a missing Kilbride woman has moved to the Cochrane Pond Road area of the Goulds.

Crews have stopped searching for 32-year-old Ann Marie Shirran around Brennan Field near her home in Kilbride after covering about three square kilometres.

Since Shirran’s disappearance on July 18, search and rescue crews have also combed through all of Bowring Park plus other trails and Petty Harbour-Long Pond via boat.

    Crime unit investigating

The matter is also being investigated by the RNC’s major crime unit.

Harry Blackmore, Rovers Search and Rescue team co-ordinator, couldn’t say why the Cochrane Pond Road area is of interest.

Here is a bit of Ann's writing - not sure of when this was written:

Not trying to read a whole lot into this but it makes me wonder if there may have been a bit of depression or underlying sadness prior to the walk on the 18th July.

Vigil tonight in Corner Brook 7:30pm Nfld time

“We’re just going to have a little bit to say about Ann and to keep the awareness of it going that she is still missing,” Follett said Monday.

Ann Marie may be a crime victim

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said it could not divulge details of an ongoing investigation but added that the force's investigation led them to the Blackhead area.

"We are [in the Blackhead area] for a specific reason," said Const. Suzanne FitzGerald.

What a desolate area to be searching for Ann Marie. Haven't heard yet whether the search has resumed today or not (14th) - almost a month now since Ann Marie disappeared.

Search for St. John's woman focuses on woods
Last Updated: Monday, August 23, 2010 | 8:31 AM NT

Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers returned Monday to a wooded area off Blackhead Road. (Cecil Haire/CBC)
Forensics experts with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are focusing their search for a missing St. John's woman on a section of dense woods outside the city.
On Sunday evening, police taped off a part of the woods on Blackhead Road, which leads from St. John's to Cape Spear.

Investigators were seen carrying large, full garbage bags from the site and loading them into a police truck. They have not commented on what they found.

This doesn't look good for Ann Marie - apparently there is a hiking trail near the area of where Blackhead Road and Maddox Road intersect. I have looked at it on satellite photos and there is nothing there. Highly doubt that Ann Marie made it from Kilbride to this area all by herself on foot. The police are saying they are searching in that area for a reason but not disclosing what the reason is.

Rumor ... stressing rumor here is that the 1 year old son has been placed into protective custody so somebody knows something ... rumor and no link to back this up.

One would think that the baby's daddy and Ann Marie's live-in would have a picture of her missing poster on his facebook page but nada ... nope.

Here is a link to current news and a video of a recent news conference by the RNC:

    http://ntv.ca/video/?p=5486

Aug 23, 2010 | The ground search continues in a wooded area in the community of Blackhead for 32-year-old Ann Marie Shirran, who has been missing for more than a month. Police have confirmed that there is a reason why they’re searching this area, but won’t yet say what that reason is. NTV’s Pam Parsons reports.
There is way more to this story than what is being reported - the family is relatively quiet and things just do not "look right" to me. All my opinion of course.

Ann's body found - foul play suspected

Ann Marie's body has been found by some campers about 1.5 hours drive from Kilbride on the coastal route 10 in a place called Cappahayden.

    Here is the news release:

Rest in peace Ann - may your little boy be wrapped in love and warmth with your family. May justice be swift and severe.

    Rest in peace, Ann Marie.

I'm so sorry that your son won't grow up knowing you, but may he be surrounded by people that truly love him and teach him about the good in the world.
