I wanted to title this "How not to talk to a teen molester". This judge just doesn't have a clue. He's not talking to a teen about driving too fast or shop-lifting. The teen has no conscience so why does the judge bother? In fact, this teen has a cognitive disability and thus that fact makes a lecture almost useless.

IMO, this type of "grandfatherly" type admonishment is simply enabling this young man to go forth and offend again. Kids with DD need swift and sure punitive feedback for negative behaviors. I have to wonder whether Judge Leonard would want Thain to move in next door to his children or grandchildren. After all, no one said the judge must understand the crime, only mete out appropriate punishment for it. Unacceptable. If kbl is reading this, I'm sorry. I know your head will explode. Mine did too.

"An 18-year-old who molested a toddler and a schoolgirl while building a library of vile child *advertiser censored* images has walked free from court.

Sick Matthew Thain collected internet pictures of children as young as four being abused by adults, as well as extreme animal *advertiser censored*, but was spared jail after a judge deemed supervision and a sexual offences prevention order would be enough to protect other children.

and

...."Judge Anthony Leonard QC said: “I cannot begin to understand what went through your mind to make you think it was appropriate to touch that 10-year-old as you did, or how you thought it was right to play with the genitals of a child who was three.

“I cannot begin to understand why you downloaded horrid photographs of things being done to very young children...."

This made me ill, unbelievable, just unreal. Is this judge senile, on drugs perhaps, or just pedo empathetic due to being one himself. Somthing is not right here, maybe they need to check on this judge some, could be he likes young people himself. Oh I am mad....

This kind of irresponsibilty on the part of judges will not stop until they are held accountable (in part at least) for the future actions of these people...because there WILL be future actions.

Well, of course they let him go. After all what's so bad about molesting small children or amassing child *advertiser censored*? I mean, really, what's the big deal? <Read dripping with sarcasm>

Awwww, come on. He wept openly through the court hearing people.

Welcome to the British "JUSTICE" system. Where "LIFE" means 15 years minus 7 for good beavior. Stories like this hit the news all the time over here.

Lets try telling the parents of the child that was abused "He did have a bad upbringing and is crying in court so i'll let him off". This guy is just 18. How long has he making his *advertiser censored* collection, planning on abusing a child? He was probably crying wondering what he would do wthout his computer if the judge sentenced him to jail. Lock him up throw away the key, and Judge, YOU obviously should not be in a position of such power when you quite clearly DO NOT know the difference between right and wrong.

The more I read about these cases and the lenient, filth-enabling judges, I have to wonder...

The judge needs to be held accountable and thrown off the bench. This is a pure disregard for the law. I'm thinking this must be some kind of joke. The teen will keep offending and never know right from wrong. Makes me sick!!

I can't believe this story and I feel like I have to be missing something as it just doesn't make any sense at all. How could he just let this teen walk? :banghead:

The element that literally floors me here is that this type of lecture or admonishment means absolutely NOTHING to a young person with MR or a cognitive disability. You might as well sit there and discuss the dangers of obesity and blood sugar with a three year old who stole a plate of cookies. Has this judge has no training in working with the disabled?

The young man has a legal definition of disability. OK. Then speak to him in a way he can process your words and make the sentence fit the crime. This young man will take away one thing from this whole proceeding. If (cross that out) WHEN he commits this crime again, he will have to dress up nicely and go to court to be talked to by a kind but stern man. He might have to cry in public again. That's it!!

I'd like to know how his family responded to the sentence and to the lecture. Most families of children with this kind of disability would know all too well that the words mean nothing. Personally, if this were my son, I would be deeply disappointed in the judge as he's doing nothing but sending the young man back to my house and to my supervision.

I don't know about the efficacy of the British offenders' programs, but ours certainly come up far short with the cognitively challenged. IMO, this young man needs to be sent to a residential facility where he can be assured the proper treatment and supervision for the community's safety. And the judge needs to be removed from the bench for this outrageous debacle.
