Today host Meredith Vieira interviewed the Anthonys live from a studio in New York.

"I'm not certain of all of the forensic evidence," Cindy Anthony said, when asked why she still thinks her slain granddaughter Caylee is alive. "A lot of stuff doesn't make sense."

Vieira asked if Cindy is saying there’s a cover-up or is it too painful to believe the child is dead. “I don’t know,” Cindy said. “A lot of stuff just doesn’t make sense to me.”

.

Vieira asked Cindy about her 911 call that set the case in motion two years ago. “I was hysterical,” Cindy said. “I don’t know why I said what I said.”

Cindy added that she never thought there was a dead body in the car, even though that’s what she said in the 911 call. “Knowing what I know now, I probably would have never even have made that statement,” Cindy told Vieira.

With their daughter, Casey Anthony, 24, in prison awaiting trial, George and Cindy Anthony celebrated with their son and future daughter-in-law.

"We just had a nice little dinner and a cake and just talked about Caylee and how much she meant to us and how much we miss her," George Anthony said this morning on NBC's "Today" show. "Planted a little bush out by her little house that was outside. Just reminisced, cried, tried to think of all the good things that little girl brought into our lives every single day."

George Anthony said he was angry when he first heard that Casey had accused him and son Lee of sexually molesting her. George said the allegations are wrong and that neither he nor Lee did anything to Casey. “It never happened,” George said.

Cindy said she had “severe anxiety attacks” that started with people protesting outside her house.

“That’s a lynch mob. That’s no different from someone coming and burning a cross on someone’s front yard,” Cindy said.

George said that he had questioned the tactics of Jose Baez, Casey’s attorney, but that Casey is satisfied with him.

Cindy Says She's Not Convinced Caylee Is Dead

“We've always said, we wanted to find out what happened to Caylee, no matter where the road or the path takes us,” George said.

Cindy said she isn't ignoring the possibility that Casey was involved in Caylee's death.

“Can I see that Casey panicked, maybe something happened? I can see, you know, something happening,” Cindy said.

“I don't want to believe that she's responsible for it. I don't want to inside believe that. If that's being in denial or something, then maybe I’m in a part of denial with that,” George said.

But Casey's parents said they will stand behind their daughter throughout her murder trial.

On NBC's "Today Show," Cindy Anthony said she regretted her infamous call to 911 reporting her granddaughter, Caylee Anthony, missing.

"I never thought that, from the beginning, that was never my instinct when I smelled it, and knowing what I know now, I probably would have never even made that statement. But I can't go back, because at that point, my perspective at that point, I had no knowledge of what I do now," Cindy Anthony said.

Casey Anthony and Lindsay Lohan: Don’t let your parents do television interviews

George and Cindy Anthony sent conflicting signals in two interviews: a taped one with Kerry Sanders and a live one with Meredith Vieira.

Cindy Anthony told Sanders there was nothing linking Casey to Caylee’s murder. George acknolwedged he might be in denial.

“Can I see that Casey panicked? Maybe something happened,” Cindy told Sanders — a point that can’t help Casey’s defense.

Casey Anthony: Fate could hinge on Perry's rulings on death penalty

Many criminal-defense attorneys argue, predictably, that Anthony's case does not qualify as a death case.

"This case falls far from being a death case," said Jose Baez, who represents Anthony, accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie. "They don't know how she [Caylee] died. They don't know when. They don't know why. Before you take someone's life, you should have all the answers."

Terry Lenamon once worked for Anthony's defense team and is a veteran of at least eight death-penalty cases and 20 other first-degree-murder cases. He agrees Anthony shouldn't be facing a potential death sentence. Rather, he said, the defense should have reached a plea agreement earlier in the case.

Recent court documents submitted by the defense suggest that very early on, Anthony was offered a 10-year prison sentence in exchange for telling authorities where Caylee's remains were located. True or not, no deal ever emerged. Baez would not discuss the issue.

Now, Lenamon insists, "This is never going to reach death. It's just not going to happen," despite the politics, personalities and media attention surrounding the case.

Casey Anthony: Brad Conway made his announcement on 'Today' for a reason

The same reason that Casey Anthony's parents appeared on the NBC show on Friday. The show has worked to gain their trust behind the scenes, and the Anthonys will turn to people they feel comfortable with -- not people who will put them on the defensive.

There are bonuses, too, in talking to "Today." By going there, a guest reaches the biggest audience of the morning programs. The show also flies guests to New York for interviews; Ann Curry questioned Conway in the studio.
