UT - Deputy Brian Harris, 41, shot to death, Kane County, 26 Aug 2010

Utah police said Kane County, Utah, Deputy Sheriff Brian Harris was shot Thursday about three miles east of Fredonia, a small town just south of the Utah border.

Officials say Harris, 41, was chasing a burglary suspect, identified as Scott Curley, 23, on foot Thursday afternoon when the suspect allegedly opened fire on Harris, killing the deputy with a high-powered rifle.

The manhunt for Curley continued through the night and into Friday. Scores of police officers, including FBI agents and U.S. Marshals from multiple states, scoured the remote desert area for any sign of Curley, described by authorities as Native American and 5"7', weighing 170 pounds.

On Friday, authorities said they received a 911 call from a woman in Kanab, Utah, who claimed she spotted a man matching Curley's description, according to the station.

The woman reportedly told police that the man was armed and standing near a trailer on a dirt road just six miles east of Kanab.

Accused Deputy Killer Decribed As Man With "Malice In His Heart"

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities searched a remote desert area in northern Arizona on Friday for a man suspected of shooting and killing a Utah sheriff's deputy with a high-powered rifle.

Scott Curley, 23, fled into the wilderness covered with rock formations and caves after Kane County Deputy Brian Harris was shot near Fredonia, a small town just south of the Utah border, authorities said.

Curley was familiar with the area and may have stashed food and supplies in caves and cliffs described as "spider holes," his friends told investigators.

A peaceful end would be the death of the deputy's killer, with no one else injured.

Huge manhunt for man who killed deputy on AZ/UT border

    snipped:

Pulliam, 68, who has lived across the street from Curley and three other men since 2005, told The Associated Press they would sometimes party at the house into the late-night hours or drive home drunk and pass out on the lawn before making it inside.

"They'd have fights out on the streets and get to whoopin' and hollerin' at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning," he said.

Pulliam, a retired truck driver, recalled a wedding at his house when Curley and the others allegedly went through parked cars but stopped without any problems when he asked them to leave.

"They were just kids being kids, and if they were irritating or being too loud, you'd go over and talk to them," he said. "They'd calm right down, say they're sorry, that they were just having a little fun and got a little carried away."

Pulliam was surprised to hear Curley was suspected of killing Harris.

"I never thought he was capable of this; he must have got awful mad," he said.

Pulliam said he doubted Curley had any supplies stashed in the wilderness or had any type of survival skills.

If someone is planning on trying to get 'lost', that is a great place to do it. There are multiple areas to hide, Without water and supplies, I don't think he would last too long however.

Footprints likely show suspected cop killer stole friend’s rifle

Fredonia, Ariz. • The first sign something was wrong may have been footprints on a basement floor and Andy Carman’s missing rifle.

Carman has been friends with Scott Curley, both 23 years old, since the pair were in kindergarten. And now it appears that Curley stole Carman’s rifle. Police say Curley then used it to kill Kane County sheriff’s Deputy Brian Harris
