Dang. Izzy I didn't see this. I didn't have the TV on this evening.

That's Nabisco. We still call it that. It used to be Nabisco.

They've identified the woman shooting as Yvonne Hiller. How horrible. That place everyone is related to or knows someone that works there. There's a hospital with a trauma unit real close by.

Prayers going out to the victims and their families.

As horrible as this is as soon as I saw where this occured I instantly smelled Nabisco. Since we were kids the smell up the Boulevard was so good. I'm very sad that such an awful thing occured like this. That woman was mad.

Oh this woman wasn't mad it sounds like she was going mad. Employees said that Ms. Hiller had imagined her co-workers were doing things to her like spraying deer urine on her clothing.

Thank God the woman was a poor shot. It seems she fired on at least two other people, including her supervisor, but missed.

My prayers go out to not only the family but the whole plant. Her co-workers will forever be affected. What a tragic act.

I'm left wondering what the answer is. Yvonne was certainly off her rocker but what is a supervisor to do?

I don't know if anyone remembers a thread I started a few months ago. It was about a man here in my county (Jackson County , OR) who was dismissed from his position. He was thought to possibly be dangerous so police moved in and removed all the guns he'd recently purchased. They were able to put him on a 72 hour mental health hold and then he demanded his guns back. Of course, he got them. Now, he's suing the county for violating his rights. I see both sides of the coin here. Here's our thread on that case:

But what IS the answer?

I was just checking on Mr. Pyles's (he asked that he be named publicly) suit and found numerous article and blog entries about this very hot ticket case. I can't bring myself to link to them as they are quite contrary to my own political and philosophical beliefs. They can be found easily, though, if you are interested. I have to admit this issue needs public discourse. Here's an article of interest. It's concerning "Pre-crime Policing":

http://reason.com/archives/2010/03/16/pre-crime-policing

I'm reminded over and over again that LE can only respond to a crime, they can rarely act pro-actively to prevent one. The only exception I've ever seen take hold is that of civil commitment for those "likely to sexually re-offend" and that isn't go so great, either.

I remember that story well MissIzzy and still feel as if the LE agents in that case took prudent action. The cases such as this one at Kraft tell us why.

The term 'going postal' is well known for a reason...

I try to read other viewpoints contrary to my own. I personally feel that Mr. Pyles's case was handled perfectly. No one was harmed and the man had a full mental health check. My hope is that by the very merit of that fact, he got some help.

However, I have to admit, that in considering our civil rights and reading blogs which hold a very different viewpoint than my own, this is a slippery slope.

It sounds like Ms. Hiller had some arguments brewing for quite some time with specific fellow employees.

After being escorted from the building and suspended Ms. Hiller went to her car and made a few phone calls. She then broke through a barricaded fence took her .357 Magnum and made her way into the building.

She found four people in a breakroom and told the woman to leave as she had no problem with her. Murdered were Tanya Renee Wilson aged 47 and Latoya Sharon Brown aged 36. Wounded shot in the neck and still in bad condition is Bryant Dalton aged 39.

A mechanic in the building is being praised for having followed Hiller around the building and explaining to police exactly where she was. Nearby 7 people hid in a room and spoke to police as well.

Neighbors said that Ms. Hiller kept to herself. She just exchanged pleasantries. They are in schock.

Ya know one source said that she had already had physical altercations with others at work. Another employee said she was very spiritual.

Maybe she just flippin snapped out? Who knows? How very sad for these victims famalies. They went to work and didn't come home.

BTW, our local news surely sensationalized it all morning long.

didn't find a site with a pic of Ms. Hiller. Just curious, she lives a couple blocks away from me. No docket sheet yet, guess she hasn't been arraigned.

So, Filly, would this be the old Nabisco plant active in the early 60's? I spent four years of my childhood in River Edge, NJ (Bergen County), 1960-1964, and my next door neighbor worked at the Nabisco plant in PA. He took my Dad and me for a tour once. Same one?

No doubt Izzy. National Bisquit Company was around I think since the late 1800's. I'm not sure where the first plant here was but this one in the news definately was there in the 60's. Up the Boulevard" is what we say.

Back in I guess maybe 2000 or so RJ Reynolds owned Kraft and Nabisco and merged them. I think that's how it went. I know it's huge big time global business. I had three friends worked there back when that merger went down.

When you eat Animal Crackers that's old time Nabisco out of Philly. My grandmom told me they were invented here. I think Kraft makes Philadelphia Cream Cheese which isn't really Philadelphian.

I thought I would add this link about the guy that actually followed Yvonne Hiller and stayed on the line with cops so they could locate her. They're saying if he hadn't helped many more may have been shot.

Dave Ciarlante the humble hero.

Snack's for a second I thought you might have worked there. Because of your name. Then I thought about Tastykake.

You know anybody lives on her block? Apparently she was a little paranoid if the neighbors are to be believed.

Thanks for posting the gentleman's name, Filly. I looked for it earlier and it hadn't been released. I'm sure he's reeling as he couldn't save more but bless you Mr. Ciarlante. You are indeed a hero in my book!!

excerpt:
During the initial confrontation, Capps said, Hiller was screaming at the three, leaving them shaken. She told Dalton, "I'm going to take you out," Capps said.

While they gave statements to the supervisor, Capps sat with them, Hiller storming into the room twice to interrupt. Then came Hiller's turn.

"It wasn't a statement," Capps said. "It was a rant. About 9/11, about Muslims, about how people have been spraying her with chemicals for years, spraying her car, her house."

(Interesting, since Hiller has been described in news reports as a "very spiritual" Muslim, and at least one of the victims, Tanya Wilson, was also a Muslim.)

I think this woman was clearly having some kind of mental breakdown complete with paranoia. Sad that she couldn't be helped before it came to this.

Don't know anybody on that block anymore, alot of people moved. I think I had family at Nabisco years ago, and Whitman's. (OT I been using snackcakes for years because when I set up my first computer I was hungry and out of cakes :) )

Interesting you should say that, Belinda. In one of the articles I read Hiller had been on the phone with 911 as she hid in that office. She was yelling "Oh NOW you wanna help me? You want to help me NOW?" so obviously she sought help or thought she did.

She also made a complaint to OSHA about checmicals being sprayed. Now was it on her or in the mix? I'm not sure.

:doh:Everybody did move. That was a stupid question for me to ask you. Sad, but true. We're holding it down though, Snack's.

Whitman's, TastyKake, Crown, Cork &Seal, Schmidt's, Goldburg's, Smith-Kline&French. Yup, we all had somebody working up in there. Oh yeah and Rohm&Haas. Yikes!

:innocent:I'd have ran to the store for ya and got ya a Tastykake while you got internet.:DThat's funny you kept that name.
