"TOOELE, Utah (AP) - Authorities in Utah think they finally know the identity of a man who was found dead 39 years ago near a landfill along the Nevada border.

Tooele County Sheriff Paul Wimmer says he's confident the body is that of David Stack of Broomfield, Colorado, who was 18 when he was last seen June 1, 1976, with a plan to hitchhike to California.

But Wimmer told the Deseret News newspaper of Salt Lake City*the identity won't be confirmed until the completion of DNA and dental testing."

No credit to you guys though...:(

"The case was reopened after a pair of sheriff's detectives learned new information about investigating cold cases at a conference."

Glad he got his name back, hopefully they can solve his murder now.

The detectives soon found a possible match between the dental records of John Doe and Stack. Authorities exhumed the body on May 12 to collect DNA samples for comparison, and the testing results were revealed Monday, Wimmer said.

Wimmer is pleased the case has made progress after nearly four decades, but he said it’s not yet closed.

“Even though the identification has been made, we still have an unsolved homicide,” he said. “We still have a lot of legwork.

"Slain New Milford teen’s brother: ‘We never stopped searching’"

http://www.newstimes.com/news/article/Slain-New-Milford-teen-s-brother-We-never-6446538.php

Nearly four decades after a family agonizingly wondered what happened to their son and brother — an 18-year-old New Milford man who disappeared while hitchhiking out west — they learned last week his fate was something they refused to consider for all those years.

His seven siblings are now struggling to accept the grim reality the family strongly hoped hadn’t happened.

“We always hoped that it was something better than it ended up being,” said Diane Collentine, the youngest sibling, who lives in New Milford.

I wonder why he was killed? that's what haunts me. He was male, which rules out those who primarily targeted female hitchhikers
