BOSTON - An early morning shooting in Boston left a toddler and three others dead, and a fifth person was hospitalized and not expected to survive, police said Tuesday. There have been no arrests, and police have asked for the public's help in the case.

Police responded to the city's Mattapan neighborhood just after 1 a.m., Commissioner Edward Davis said.

Two men and a woman found in the street were pronounced dead at the scene.

The toddler, aged either 2 or 3, died later at the hospital, police department spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said. A man in his 30s was taken to a hospital and is not expected to survive, she said.

The shooting took place on Woolson Street, lined with close-packed, three-story homes. Family and friends of the victims hugged and cried behind yellow police tape Tuesday as neighbors looked on, shaking their heads.

"Why?" one woman wailed, as others attempted to console her. A minister was also at the scene.

Mattapan is on the southern edge of the city near the border with the affluent suburb of Milton.

The shooting was the latest in a spike of violence in the city that has frustrated police, politicians and community leaders. There had been 50 homicides in the city as of Sept. 27, according to police department data, up from 40 in the same period last year. In Mattapan, there had been 14 homicides in 2010 prior to Tuesday's incident, compared to six at the same time in 2009.

The shooting left a toddler and three other people dead; a fifth victim is hospitalized and not expected to survive.

There have been no arrests and police have asked the public for help.

Menino is calling this a "senseless act caused by those who have no regard for life."

Sad sad story I woke up to this morning.

FGS, what the hell is going on with these people?

My prayers go out to that family and community. There are never answers or explanations for this violence.

Those crime statistics are absolutely appalling. Is it the economy, a rise in drug use or gangs in that particular section of the city? What is it?

We have affirmative information that these individuals (victims and killers) were known to each other and this was not a random shooting," he told reporters.

Police said they are looking for a gray or silver Ford Explorer.

The motive in this case is not yet known, but sources tell WBZ they are looking into a possible drug connection.

Arrest made in connection to Mattapan slayings

Boston police have arrested Kimani Washington of Dorchester in Manchester, N.H., in connection with the Mattapan killings of four people including a toddler.

Kimani, who is in his 30s, was not charged with murder, but he was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle, police said. He was apprehended by the Boston Police Fugitive Task force and homicide detectives, Elaine Driscoll, spokeswoman for the Boston police, said.

“We will begin the extradition process as soon as possible,” said Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley.

Five people were found shot on Woolson Street in Mattapan early Tuesday morning. Four of the victims, including a 2-year-old toddler, died. A fifth victim is clinging to life in a Boston hospital.

Authorities said today that the murders of four people in Mattapan -- including a 2-year-old boy -- began with the robbery of a drug dealer but ended with the victims being marched through the neighborhood before each was shot multiple times.

The alleged motive for the brutal killings was detailed in Dorchester Municipal Court today where Dwayne Moore, 33, was arraigned on four counts of first degree murder and other charges. Moore pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge then sentenced Dwayne Moore to life in prison without the possibility of parole...

Moore was convicted of killing Simba Martin, 21; his girlfriend Eyanna Flonory, 21; her 2-year-old son, Amanihotep Smith; and Levaughn Washum-Garrison, 22, who had been sleeping on Martin’s couch the night of the killings.

From January 2013:

The key prosecution witness in the trials of two men charged with killing a toddler and three adults during a drug robbery in Boston in September 2010 has been sentenced to up to 18 years in prison for his role in the crime.

Kimani Washington on Friday apologized to the victim’s families before pleading guilty to robbery, carjacking, home invasion and possession with intent to distribute drugs. Washington admitted participating in the robbery, but said he left the scene before the shootings that left four dead and a fifth victim paralyzed...

Edward Washington, Kimani Washington’s cousin, was acquitted.
