Angry student kills self after webcam spying UPDATE: Conviction Overturned

Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton have been charged with invasion of privacy for allegedly placing a camera in the 18-year-old student's dorm room. The victim later committed suicide.

Apparently Mr. Ravi's roommate had asked him not to come to the room until after midnight so he could be with his boyfriend. Mr. Ravi and Miss Wei decided to use a webcam to record the encounters then send out a message on Twitter for people to IChat him between 9 and midnight to watch his roommate have sex with his boyfriend. As a result of being outed by these 2 idiots the roommate killed himself. I hope these 2 get the book thrown at them.

What a pig. Did you read his twitter thread?

What's really sick is that the max he is facing is 5 years. Probably get less than 18 months after he pretends he is so sorry for being a raging homophobe and a crappy roommate.

Oh gosh. This is so bad. How can people be so cruel? They think it is such a joke until somebody dies. My heart aches for them. How utterly humilated they must have been. There is so much unnecessary cruelty in the world. This just makes me so, so sad.

I am just disgusted by this. What business is it of this troglodite if his roommate has sex! And his partner in crime should have known better. I think charges should be a lot more serious than invasion of privacy. Too bad the stalker laws couldn't apply here....or hate crime laws.

Sorry that both Ravi & Wei's parents for paying college tuition and find out they got trouble by their recent actions. That's tough way to start out by sending them there & might lose them to prison due to broke the law.

Throw the book at these kids. Make an example of them. This idea that everyone else's private business is up for grabs to "go viral" has to stop, here and now.

When you consider the crap so many kids post on the internet about themselves, is it any wonder they have no respect for the privacy of others? Nothing is sacred. It's all just one big freaking joke. Sickening!

I'm very sad for the young man's family.

Spend ten minutes on one the popular surveillance equipment sites, and you will totally freak out. When I read that Earl Bradley used a camera pen which can record hours of video, I was shocked. That's when I decided to check it out. Tiny cameras can be hidden in wall sockets, smoke detectors, vents, books, clocks.....anywhere. And the prices are well within most people's reach--starting at only $30. It's quite eye-opening.

I wish these two young college students had remembered what they should have learned in Kindergarten: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

My prayers go out to this young man's family and true friends. What a horrid thing to do to a young person.

It's one thing when they post crap about themselves-that's perfectly legal. Quite another to post videos of somebody else without that person's consent.

It's the pure meanness which takes my breath away. Sure, these two kids never expected for the young man to commit suicide but the unvarnished truth is that they did this out of cruelty.

Once they are able to look through his computer, there a few ways he could get some pretty serious charges..

    1) Hes only 18, I doubt that this is the first time he has recorded someone without them knowing - If he has ever recorded anyone underage doing something like this and streamed/uploaded it somewhere that would be child pornogaphy.

    2) Out of all the people on the sites that he posted this to SOMEONE must have emailed him complaining about him recording/streaming without someones permission, his responses to those people could be very important to this case.

    3) If there are any emails/comments that he made on his computer about the victim being gay that could be considered a hate crime.

Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, who authorities and his family say committed suicide after a hidden camera broadcast a gay sexual encounter in his dorm room, changed his Facebook status to "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry" on Sept. 22, according to a saved image of the Facebook page.
