Search intensifies for missing woman, 80

BROCKVILLE — The search for a missing 80-year-old Brockville woman intensified Wednesday afternoon, with OPP divers searching the Back Pond and a Brockville youth, arrested in Ottawa in possession of the woman's vehicle, appearing in court here.

As first reported on the Recorder and Times website, city police first sought the public's help on Tuesday in locating Valerie Xavier, 80, who was last heard from at home, at 820 Laurier Boulevard, on Sunday at 8 p.m.

On Monday, Ottawa police found and seized Xavier's vehicle in that city and arrested a 16-year-old Brockville male who was in possession of it, police revealed Wednesday.

The youth was taken to Brockville, where he appeared in court and was released on bail.

On Tuesday, city police asked for help from the Ontario Provincial Police, who brought in their emergency response team and helicopter, which could also be seen over Brockville on Wednesday.

Both the city police and OPP canine units were in Brockville Wednesday afternoon conducting a search. An OPP underwater search and recovery unit from Gravenhurst arrived on Wednesday afternoon and checked the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area off McLarry Road, just north of the city limits.

A few hours later, they called off the pond search, after finding nothing, said OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae. They continued to search the forested area near the back pond for clues.

Oh this doesn't sound good :( This is about 30 minutes from my family home. I have such a soft spot for the elderly, that hearing of any crimes against them just break me. I am so sad for her.

The 16-year-old male is scheduled to appear in Brockville court today at 2:00pm on charges of possession of stolen credit card, theft over $5000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

The Brockville Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police are conducting a joint multi-jurisdictional investigation under the Major Case Management System, led by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

Anyone with information about the disappearance of Valerie XAVIER is asked to call the Brockville Police Service at 613-342-0127.

Hope they are keeping a very close watch on this youngster while he is out on bail.

Missing woman believed dead

Police detectives believe that Valerie Xavier, an 80-year-old widow reported missing on Sunday, is dead, and the prime suspect in the case is a 16-year-old boy arrested in Ottawa on Monday and charged with stealing the elderly woman’s car and credit card, the Citizen has learned.

Brockville Police and Ontario Provincial Police spent Thursday searching for Xavier’s body in a wildlife conservation area north of her Brockville condominium. They used a helicopter, K-9 units and a police dive team in the search, which as of mid-evening was still unsuccessful.

A few months ago, Xavier, a longtime private home care worker for seniors, took in the youth as a boarder and, according to her family, had not had any known problems with him.

On the last day she was seen alive — Sunday for breakfast at her son’s place — she seemed to be in good spirits as she said goodbye and began the drive back to her home on Laurier Boulevard in Brockville.

However, when she still couldn’t be contacted at 8 p.m. Sunday, family members began to worry. Her condo was empty and her car was gone. She was reported missing and police bulletins were issued.

The car was spotted Monday by Ottawa police, who also found stolen items, including Xavier’s credit card.

The boy was arrested on charges of theft over $5,000.

The boy was questioned by police in the presence of his parents, but didn’t give any information about the whereabouts of Xavier.

The police investigation has led detectives to Mac Johnson Wildlife Area, just north of Brockville’s city limits. Xavier’s condo has also been secured by police, who are treating it as a crime scene as detectives work on what they call a no-body homicide case while continuing the search for the body of Xavier.

who is this kid and why would she take in a 16 year old unless he's related?

and whether or not he's related, there had to be problems to begin with that made it necessary for him to live somewhere else than with his parents ...

so why was that burden placed on an 80 year-old woman?!

other people had to have known of the arrangement - maybe they thought it would be mutually beneficial - that a 16 year old could help her with chores etc...
 
It frustrates me that the kid was allowed to walk out the door to enjoy his freedom with this woman feared dead. The last place she was seen (her car) along with her stolen items are found with him and he walks on bail? They have plenty of charges to hold him. Make him sit in a sell and see if he cracks. At this rate he is going to feel like he can get away with anything and not say a word about what happened to her.

And I agree with others, why is this 80 year old women having to deal with raising a teenage boy? You don't just give room and board to a kid. That's what adults do. She obviously had a part in raising this kid, at 80?
 
Search for missing woman moves to Cardinal

Ontario Provincial Police officers are now searching a property near Cardinal in their continuing efforts to locate 80-year-old Brockville resident Valerie Xavier.

OPP Sgt. Kristine Rae would provide no further details of the search on Monday, a week since Xavier was reported missing.

OPP officers began searching a piece of property near Cardinal on Monday, said Rae, who would not elaborate on what led the investigators there.

I wish they could just find her so this could be over. :( Cardinal is bringing it all even closer to home.

A Brockville teen has been charged with second-degree murder in the case of a missing senior.

Valerie Xavier, 80, was last seen more than one week ago at a family gathering. She was reported missing on Sept. 27.

A 16-year-old male who was found driving her car in Ottawa last week is now facing second-degree murder charges.

Police have not located Xavier's body.

Teen's phone call key to arrest in widow's killing

In an interrogation room and in the presence of his parents, a 16-year-old boy offered police nothing about the killing of Valerie Xavier, let alone where they might find her body.

But apparently, he had already done enough talking days before.

The boy, charged in the killing of his elderly landlady, made a call to a friend Sunday, the day the widowed victim went missing.

The accused, whose identity is shielded by youth-crime laws, allegedly revealed incriminating details in the phone call about the events of Sept. 26.

Xavier, 80, was reported missing to police after she couldn't be reached about 8 p.m. that evening. Her car, normally parked outside her Brockville condo, was also gone.

The longtime private home-care worker for seniors had taken in the troubled teen as a boarder a few months before and, according to the woman's family, she had said she had no problem with him.



Police fear that her acts of kindness ultimately put her in harm's way the day she let a young troubled boy into her home.

Her family initially said they feared the worst but, after direction from police, put on a brave front, saying publicly they hoped she was alive.

The family has also been told not to discuss certain details surrounding the police investigation, which included a search of telephone and credit card records and surveillance.
