Police retraced their steps Sunday in Zahra Baker's neighborhood, more than 24 hours after she disappeared.
Zahra's parents said they last saw her sleeping in her bed around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, and reported her missing about 12 hours later. They told police they thought Zahra was sleeping.

Missing Hickory girl case turns into homicide investigation
HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Police say an AMBER alert issued three days ago for a missing Hickory girl has been canceled, and the case has now transitioned into a homicide investigation.
Zahra Claire Baker was reportedly last seen by her step-mother on Saturday at 2:30 a.m. sleeping at her home on 21st Avenue Northwest in Hickory. According to the Hickory Police Department (HPD), the 10-year-old was not reported missing by her father, Adam Baker, until 12 hours later.
On Monday, the HPD said investigators found a ransom note in a car parked outside the home where the family lives.

Stepmother of missing Hickory girl arrested
The stepmother of a missing Hickory girl was arrested Sunday morning on outstanding charges unrelated to the 10-year-old's disappearance.
Police booked Elisa Baker on charges of larceny by employee, driving with a revoked license, passing worthless check and communicating threats. None of those charges is related to the disappearance of Zahra Claire Baker, police said, but Elisa Baker has not been eliminated as a person of interest.
Police said Sunday that details have emerged that make it seem less likely that a stranger abducted Zahra, who was reported missing a day earlier by her father, Adam, and stepmother, Elisa.

Police suspect a missing Hickory girl who impressed people with her winning smile and polite manners is probably dead, and now call the case a homicide as the search for her body continued Tuesday.
Hickory police reclassified the missing-person case and charged the girl's stepmother with felony obstruction of justice, after they say Elisa Baker admitted writing a fake ransom note to throw off the investigation into Zahra Clare Baker's disappearance.

Searchers look in brush pile for missing girl
Sheriff's deputies plan to resume searching a brush pile just north of Morganton Wednesday morning for any clues concerning a missing 10-year-old girl, and her stepmother, who police call a person of interest in the case, is scheduled to appear in court.
The search site is located in an area where a tree trimming company dumps tree limbs and other debris. It is located off Hartland Road near Bristol Creek Avenue.
Officials searched the area late Tuesday night and ended their search on Wednesday around 1 a.m. The pile of debris is about 100 feet by 50 feet.

Prayers for Zahra Baker as crews drain pond in search for missing Hickory Girl

Several hundred people gathered at a local church for a candlelight vigil for 10-year-old Zahra Baker Wednesday night, as police expanded their search for the missing girl and drained a pond near the tree-trimming company where her father has worked.
People sang and prayed for Zahra outside the East Hickory Baptist Church, their children playing on swings and a jungle gym nearby.

Crews searching pond in Burke County
Late Wednesday afternoon, firetrucks arrived at an area that police and canine units have been searching in connection with the disappearance of Zahra Baker. Crews unrolled hoses and started draining a pond on the property they've been searching for the past two days.
Hickory police say officers, search dogs involved in previous efforts and additional search dogs returned to and expanded the search area on Wednesday afternoon.
