Steve was last seen in Gastonia, North Carolina on April 3, 1975. He left behind an uncashed income tax return for $500.
Steve had previously left home without warning on March 9. He did leave a note for his parents, but didn't say where he was going. He had gone to Texas to see a 30-year-old married woman he was having an affair with. The woman's husband caught them on March 30 and threatened to kill Steve. The woman promised to go with her husband to New Orleans, Louisiana as long as he didn't kill Steve. Steve left for home on March 31.
In the days after he got home, Steve told friend's he thought the husband was following him. On the day of his disappearance, he had dinner with friends. He said he saw the husband's car following them. Steve dropped his friends off at 10:30 pm, and he has not been seen since. Several hours later, his car was found abandoned. Steve has never been found, and foul play is suspected.
