MI - Ella Stafford, 15 mos, & Johnathan Sanderlin, 13 mos, drowned, 22 Oct 2010

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Two small children were found dead Tuesday in a suburban Detroit apartment, and a 27-year-old man was taken into custody while investigators searched the building, police said.

Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 2 a.m. and found the children inside an apartment, said Detective Lt. James Wilkewitz of the Allen Park police. Police wouldn't speculate on a possible cause of death. Autopsies were planned.

The children have been identified as Ella Stafford, 15 months old, and her half-brother, Jonathon Sanderlin, 13 months old.

She described the man as "rude" and impatient with the children.

"He's the type of person who doesn't get along with others," Peters said. "I called the cops when he left the babies in his van this summer. It was June or July. I heard a baby and I saw them in the van. Police said he'd been called on before."

Relatives of the family said the children's father, Steven L. Nicholson, 27, of Allen Park, is being questioned by police.

Ella's mother, Tayler Stafford, 19, said Nicholson had legal custody of the girl and she had visitation rights

Tayler Stafford said her daughter loved her father very much. She last saw her baby on Sunday.

read that he was not alone that night . . . " a confrontation between Steven Nicholson and the mother of one of the children hours before police were called to the residence."

One of the mothers was seen at the apartment prior to the babies being found & it also stated the father was so drunk he had to be awakened by neighbors in which thats when he found his babies and called 911 (from a poster in the comments section).

    He loves alcohol & MJ apparently . . .

    from your link

Detective Jeff Miller told the court that officers found Nicholson sitting on the floor and the children lying in front of him on their backs.

He said the little boy had burns on his face, arms, legs and torso. Miller said the little girl had burns on her legs, her skin was pale and her lips were purple.

He said both children appeared to be deceased.

    http://www.detnews.com/article/20101...-abuse-charges

Nicholson's mother has told The News that he has a drinking problem, and sometimes carried a pint of liquor in a back pocket.

Nicholson has a lengthy record of mostly misdemeanors, including malicious destruction of property and alcohol and marijuana offenses. Some of the offenses date to his teenage years. Police said they've been called to the home before.

Court authorities confirmed Nicholson at one time faced a domestic abuse charge but declined to release the records.

Services for Ella will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Martenson Funeral Home, Allen Park, 10915 Allen Road. Jonathan's funeral is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Peterson Funeral Home Inc., 205 E. Cass in Cadillac.

Dad accused of murdering two 1 yr olds

A suburban Detroit man declared, "I didn't hurt my babies," after he was arraigned on murder charges Friday in the drowning deaths of his two toddlers.

Steven Nicholson was so distraught he could barely say his name as he stood in court just a few hours after prosecutors filed charges in the deaths of 15-month-old Ella Stafford and 13-month-old Johnathan Sanderlin, whose bodies were discovered in Nicholson's apartment.
Nicholson, 27, called 911 about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to say the children had drowned.
When officers arrived, Nicholson was sitting on the floor with the bodies in front of him, Allen Park police Detective Jeff Miller told a judge.

The babies were scalded and drowned

Bless little Ella and Johnathan...may you fly with the angels. So so sad. The father's crime and his behavior reminds me more of what we see with mothers. I'll be very interested to see how this plays out. So often, DHS doesn't have "quite enough to go on" to remove the children. The article states that the mothers didn't live with the father but I'm unclear as to where the children lived.

My prayers are with the families of the babies.

They lived with the father, according to reports on NG last night.

He talks about his 16 year old brother being murdered, staying close to God, and helping his babies' mothers stabilize their lives. 100s of photos of his babies. He mentions that these two are the first two to make it to life and that he has many unborn ones in heaven. Now he has two who once lived in heaven.......
