VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Officials closed three beaches in California on Friday after a shark killed a bodyboarder, local media reported.
The attack occurred off Surf Beach at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Friday morning.
The 20-year-old victim died after the shark bit off his leg. A friend on a surfboard got the victim to shore but he bled to death, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters.

That is so sad! I feel terrible for that young man's family.

I remember this summer there were warnings issued of great white sharks off La Jolla. I wonder if it was one of those.
Lifeguards are urging caution after half a dozen great white shark sightings have been reported along the Southern California coast in the last week, but experts downplayed the risk of attacks on humans, saying there is no cause for alarm. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/18/local/la-me-shark-warning-20100818

May his soul RIP forever and may the Lord comfort his family and friends, especially those who were with him, in Jesus' Name, amen.

How horrible! This story brought a flashback to the shark scares of the 70s following the movie Jaws.

Oh, gosh! He was from Perris.

The first thing I thought of when I heard of this was he must be a student at Santa Barabara.

This really scares me to death. I LOVE the beach but I'm afraid of the water, LOL......One of my daughters b/f is an avid surfer. He goes any time he can! He's actually from NY but he's in love with the California surf.

Every time I hear of a 'shark' I freak. Of course I always call my daughter and she says "he's ok, mom."

God Bless this young man and his family as well.

Sincerely,
fran
