ALLEGANY STATE PARK — United Methodist churches in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties are sending out prayers for one of their own.

The Rev. Thomas B. Hamilton, 92, who retired 10 years ago as pastor of Great Valley United Methodist Church, has been missing since Wednesday in heavily wooded Allegany State Park.

Hamilton, who still presides over weekly Bible classes at the church, and his daughter, Rebecca Huffman, 72, visited the park Wednesday to hike the woods, and ventured onto an unmarked trail near the Summit Area. The two had recently returned from Dayton, Ohio, where Huffman lives.

But they became disoriented and were forced to spend the night in the woods. On Thursday morning Hamilton became too tired to go on, so Huffman left him to seek help, according to State Park Police.

    Hello, Summer Breeze~

God surely sent a message to Rebecca Huffman (Rev. Hamilton's daughter) to stay strong in faith:

The Rev. John M. Green of East Otto assumed duties at the church in July and soon came to know Hamilton, who is a constant presence at Sunday morning services.

Green was at Allegany State Park on Friday to meet with Huffman and other family members.

“She’s doing quite well and hopes to bring [her father] out soon,” Green said late Friday.

Green described a chance encounter that occurred amid search activities Friday.

An unidentified woman who had been hiking on another trail found a pair of moccasins and brought them to the command center, where she was introduced to Huffman. (The moccasins were later found not to be connected to the missing man).

Huffman noticed the woman was wearing a prayer shawl, which the hiker removed and placed on Huffman’s shoulders.Rebecca then became very upbeat,” Green recalled.

“We know the Lord sent her [the woman],” the pastor said.

    Thanks for the welcome!

May God continue to watch over Rev. Hamilton's family, friends and the searchers.

    A little more info:

Hamilton, of Great Valley, is an avid walker who is in fantastic shape; however, authorities said Hamilton is not dressed to freezing temperatures. Hamilton's daughter was taken to Olean General Hospital to be checked out. Officials say she was not hurt.

"Certainly we were concerned [about the cold weather] the first night. I'll admit that," said said Major Christopher Cummings of the New York State Police. "And now that we're going into the third night and the fourth operation period of the search, our concerns are heightened."

SALAMANCA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Rescue crews are now in the fourth day of searching for a 92 year old hiker missing in Allegany State Park.

Rescuers hope a new description of where he was last seen will lead them to him.

On Sunday about 250 search and rescue personnel combed more than 4000 acres in Allegany State Park.

Gosh, what could this concrete structure be that Rev. Hamilton's daughter remembers leaving him at when she set out to get help?

(Summer, I'm so glad you included the sketch in your post of 2:18pm today. Hopefully, someone who hikes in Allegany State Park will recognize it!)

Rebecca Huffman, the daughter of the missing man, Thomas Hamilton, last remembers seeing a three foot high concrete structure. It was white and approximately 15-20 feet long, six feet wide with an opening or entranceway. Inside of the structure is an inlayed mosaic stone floor, located on a slope or hillside.
Huffman made a hand sketch of the wall that she last remembers seeing in the area she left her father.
Park Police Sgt. Clyde Doty is hoping someone from the public will recognize this area, and help lead them to it.

"Nobody appears to know about that structure or where it could be located. So what we're asking from the general public if anybody recognizes that or has knowledge of where it maybe located to give us a call," says Doty.

If anyone has ever seen anything similar and knows the area in the park, please contact the New York State Parks Police at 716-354-9111.

Too bad Mr. Hamilton didn't have a lighter or matches. He could have used that structure as a fire pit to keep warm. He could have also used the fire to get attention, perhaps making a smokey fire during the day.

The retired Great Valley minister has been missing since he went hiking Wednesday afternoon with his daughter, Rebecca Hoffman, 66, of Dayton, Ohio.

They strayed from a trail in the north end of the park, east of State Park Road 1, and got lost. Searchers are now trying to retrace the last known points where Hoffman was before she found help.

“Those last known points are hard to figure out because she’s the only one who can direct us to them, and she’s having a hard time doing it,” said Doty.

Hoffman also provided search organizers with a description of an unusual stone or concrete structure near where she had left her father.

Unfortunately, helicopters were unable to locate it, and people familiar with the park have said they were unaware of such a structure, said Doty.

“It’s a stone wall, man-made type structure, he said.

Hoffman described it as being about 3 feet tall, 6 feet wide and 10 to 15 feet long with a stone floor, said Doty.

Anyone aware of the structure’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact State Park Police at 354-9111.
