Missing man was expecting cash windfall

Last Updated: November 17, 2010 7:03pm
David Luborsky told his pals around the Parklane Residence he was about to come into a chunk of money.

Two weeks ago he vanished.

He didn't pack, not even a toothbrush.

His family last heard from him Nov. 2. His uncle, Tom Cousins, spoke to him on the phone. Luborsky sounded agitated. Cousins was trying to get him to sign the last of the documents that would entitled him to part of a class-action settlement.

"We've been his advocates," said his aunt, Maria Rey. "He's always used us as his first source for bailing him out."
His lawyer promises to protect his claim.

This is so bizarre! He goes missing BEFORE he receives the settlement money?
Why did he sound agitated? Was he refusing to sign that last document? or did he think someone was trying to hurt him?

This article raises SO many questions :(

I really hope D.Luborsky is staying at a friend's place or a shelter and he is safe.
I am assuming his family and LE have contacted ALL hospitals (not only the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre) and ALL the shelters.

When he vanished, David Luborsky was one signature away from thousands of dollars.

Luborsky, 33, was going to use the cash to see his two-year-old son Wyatt.

His ex didn’t want him to see Wyatt, and Gatineau’s child welfare department had made the mentally ill but high-functioning man undergo psychological tests before he could take action to get him back.

He would have hired a lawyer with his share of a multi-million-dollar class-action settlement with a pharmaceutical firm whose drug sent him into a four-day coma.

Heartbreaking! :(

Hope he comes home soon

The mother of a missing man’s young son says she has no idea where David Luborsky is either.

Luborsky, 33, hasn’t been seen since he walked away from the Parklane Residence on Merivale Rd. on Nov. 4.

That morning, staff at the residence say Kim Machin had called the front desk looking for him.

Machin and Luborsky had a rocky relationship and a child named Wyatt, who turns three in February. She has another son from a previous relationship.

Thank you myzzy. That article contains new info we haven't heard before :( I hope I'm wrong, but I have a bad feeling about all this. I pray David is just hiding somewhere, and he is well and safe.
Luborsky was a signature away from getting thousands of dollars as part of a multi-million dollar class-action settlement with drug company Eli Lilly.

He stands to get about $50,000, but family said he told people he might be getting as much as $250,000 or even $1 million.

His son would receive the money in trust should something happen to him, family says.

“I have no clue, first of all,” said Machin, who’s caring for her sons at her mother’s home in Aylmer. “I don’t believe he’d leave Wyatt.”

While cops aren’t saying they suspect anything shady in Luborsky’s disappearance, nothing has been ruled out either.

His family has put up a $1,000 reward for information. They’re also raising funds to pay for a private investigator through a Facebook page called “Donate to Locate.”

They’ve hired veteran investigator Terry Kuzma to find Luborsky, who also goes by David Kearns.

Kuzma found that Luborsky emptied out a stash of money he kept at the Parklane’s front desk just days before he vanished.

Luborsky had only $150, but he would usually just nibble away at his monthly deposit a few dollars at a time.

His family says that he’d been increasingly agitated before he left.

Kuzma said Machin had been “calling him and calling him,” something she denies.

I would like to know more about this. It should be easy for cops to find out if she had really been 'calling and calling him' in the days before he went missing.

If she had, and she lied, then she might have lured him into danger. She has two big motives imo. Keeping him away from the child if she thinks he is wanting to fight for shared custody, esp. if she thinks he has mental issues. AND her child receives the $$$ if he is declared dead.

On the other hand, if she didn't make the phone calls, then his statement could be interpreted differently. The 'calling and calling' him could have been voices in his head, and he may have been suffering a meltdown.

Mom waiting for call from missing man

For Sue Kearns, it is the agony of not knowing whether her missing son is dead or alive that kills her.

David Luborsky, a young father who regularly phoned his mom, vanished without a trace in Ottawa in November 2010.

He would celebrate his 35th birthday on April 26.

Kearns said her heart still skips a beat when the phone rings, wondering if it will be her son.

But more than a year after Luborsky disappeared, that call has never come, despite Kearns hiring a private investigator and offering a reward.
