The shooting of 29-year-old twin sisters Monday at an Arapahoe County gun range continues to puzzle investigators, and their family in Australia still doesn't know which sister is dead.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade located the family in Victoria state in southeast Australia Tuesday evening. Because the women look the same, Arapahoe County authorities are not sure which one was killed.

Both women were shot in the head, one of them dying instantly.

From the link Tuffy provided:

Investigators still don't know whether the shooting was an accident, a suicide or foul play. No suicide note was found.

"Every time I get new information there's a new twist," sheriff's Capt. Louie Perea said. "We're keeping an open mind."

Investigators have ruled out the possibility that a third person could have shot them.

How strange. Maybe a suicide pact?

Twins' shooting called double suicide attempt

THE family of Victorian twins who were shot in the head at a Colorado shooting range this week are understood to still not know which one has died and which one has survived, with a worker at the range calling it a double suicide attempt.

Local police last night said they had ruled out homicide but were keeping an open mind into the shooting of the sisters, 29, who were in the US on cultural-exchange visas.

That has to be one of the strangest stories I've ever read.

Very Strange!

Especially the last lines of the news article.

snipped:

Doug Hamilton, the owner of the range, says the women were using small caliber guns and they were shot nearly simultaneously.

He believes the women were recreational shooters, and said the shooting was not an accident.

"It was a deliberate shooting," Hamilton said.

When asked why, he said, "From what I know of the things I cannot tell you."

What does that mean?

Did they shoot each other????????

That is the feeling I'm getting from the article.

The family seems to know which twin is which now, still waiting on release of fingerprints to be sure:

Witnesses say the women were upbeat and talkative right before the shooting(s). One borrowed a jacket from another person at the range. The video shows that they fell backward simultaneously...but does not show them being shot. Huh?!? Wouldn't video surveillance cameras at a shooting range be trained on...you know...the SHOOTERS? How bizarre!

Investigator's were able to talk to the surviving twin of this awful tragedy. She confirmed the sister's indeed planned a suicide.

How awful. Another article I read said the girl's family is making their way here to the States from Australia.

That is awful news for that family. Thank you for the update Filly.

Wow, this is so sad. I wonder what bothered them so much that they felt this was the only answer. A family shooting range, yes they planned ahead. I cannot imagine. So very sad for the family and the surviving twin. :(

Side note: Why did this paper mention their names when all said they did not want the names mentioned?!

You know, this sad situation reminded me of another set of twins.

Basically in a nutshell, they shared a moment of madness and tried to commit suicide by running into heavy traffic. There is video on youtube. I was rather fascinated by the whole thing.
Sabina was taken in by a local resident, whom she later killed in an unprovoked attack.

The Video in in 4 parts.
Here is part one, there are links to the others there.

The Eriksson case is one of the most bizarre I can remember. Shocking & chilling. The YouTube material is must-see stuff.

More on the Australian twins - fraternal, though they do look identical in the photo - here:

and, of course, London's Daily Mail has it too:

Snipped and bbm, I cannot believe I have never heard of this, both cases so sad, I really feel for the families involved

This is so sad. I'm curious though - did each sister shoot the other? Does this mean the surviving sister will be charged with murder? Or, did they each attempt to shoot themselves?

This is so upsetting.
