A West Haven father faces child abuse charges after authorities said he beat his son when the boy refused to let him take his PlayStation video game system and sell it for beer money.

William McKinney, 51, of Rangely Street, was arraigned in Superior Court Thursday on charges of risk of injury to a minor and breach of peace.

McKinney remained in custody late Thursday, unable to post a $15,000 bond set by the court.

West Haven Police Sgt. Paul Raucci said officers learned of the abuse after responding to a complaint at a Rangely Street home about 4 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators learned that McKinney apparently wanted to hawk his son's PlayStation at a pawnshop for beer. When the boy refused to give up the video game system, McKinney hit him, Raucci said. The boy's age was not released.

The child's mother later traded the PlayStation in for cash and came home with beer, police said.
