    Morenci Police News Conference 02/11/2011

Skelton investigation is not being treated as a murder case
Police have switched the focus of the Skelton brothers investigation from a missing persons case to a murder case.
The announcement was made at a news conference this afternoon, 68 days after 9-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner were last seen at their father’s home in Morenci.
Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said the investigative team, which includes state police and FBI agents, met Jan. 19 to evaluate the evidence collected to that point.
“The decision was made by myself to shift the focus of the investigation (to a murder case),” Weeks said in a separate interview.

Case of 3 missing brothers is homicide probe
The disappearance of three young Michigan brothers has turned into a homicide investigation, a police chief said Tuesday, dashing hopes that the boys who were last seen with their father at Thanksgiving are safe somewhere.
Morenci Chief Larry Weeks is now asking people in the area, along the Michigan-Ohio border, to be on the lookout for bodies. He said investigators have followed up on 900 tips but they have not been fruitful.
"We've seen false hope continue to grow," he told reporters.

Morenci boys case now a murder investigation, chief says

The search for three missing boys is now a murder investigation, Police Chief Larry Joe Weeks said Tuesday.
John R. Skelton, the father of Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner Skelton, 5, who have been missing since Thanksgiving Day, is the prime suspect, Weeks told reporters and community residents during a news conference at the Morenci Fire Department.

"From this point forward, this is no longer a missing person case, but a murder investigation," said Weeks. The chief cited what he called "false hope growing in the community."
Weeks said comments from Skelton in court have been misleading or false. Skelton is charged with parental kidnapping and contempt of court for failing to turn over the boys in a custody dispute. He is being held in the Lenawee County Jail on $30 million bond.

    Three missing boys presumed dead
Morenci Chief Larry Weeks is now asking people in the area, along the Michigan-Ohio border, to be on the lookout for bodies. He said investigators have followed up on 900 tips but they have not been fruitful.
''We've seen false hope continue to grow,'' he told reporters.
Weeks said the boys' father, John Skelton, is the primary focus of the investigation, although no new charges have been filed. Skelton already has been charged with parental kidnapping and is being held on a $30 million bond.
Lawyer John Glaser, who is defending Skelton in the kidnapping case, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Skelton, other jail inmates free to pick up phone
Calls to television news departments may be rare, but Lenawee County Jail inmates are free to use the telephone as much as they like. People receiving the calls, however, must agree to pay the reverse charges.
A telephone interview with inmate John Skelton was broadcast Wednesday by Detroit’s WXYZ after the father of three missing Morenci boys called a reporter there to deny harming them. He remains in jail while parental kidnapping charges are pending and the Morenci police investigate the boys’ disappearance as a possible homicide case.
Skelton’s call to WXYZ raised questions about how he was able to telephone the television station and who paid for the long distance call.
