GUILTY VA - Daniel Woolverton for raping infant, Arlington, 2010

A disbarred US Army lawyer and 1997 West Point graduate has pleaded guilty in federal court to sexual exploitation of a child. Daniel A. Woolverton, 35, of Arlington, VA, and originally Lakeland, FL, was sentenced recently to 27 years in federal prison for sexually assaulting a several month-old infant boy which he videotaped. He currently also faces local charges in Virginia of rape and forcible sodomy of the infant.

Woolverton, who both made and distributed child *advertiser censored*, was observed by an undercover FBI agent of using peer-to-peer file sharing software in May and July of 2009. Using an alias screen name, Woolverton subsequently shared child *advertiser censored* images and videos with the agent. The user profile was linked to a computer at Woolverton’s home address. An FBI executed search warrant allowed agents to seize a camera, computers, and several memory storage devices which contained more than 30,000 images of child *advertiser censored* and more than 1,000 videos. Woolverton was also married to another US Army lawyer and had two small children. His spouse, Major Deborah Woolverton, purportedly disavows all knowledge of these events or her husband’s trove of *advertiser censored* which was mostly victimized infants and toddlers.

One memory card contained 16 images and three videos of an adult male engaging in sexually explicit conduct with an infant who appeared to be two to three months old. A wristwatch on the adult male and items in the photo linked Woolverton as the adult in the photo.

Records indicate that Woolverton’s assignment as a lawyer for the US Army was prosecutor/trial attorney for the US Army Legal Services in Virginia. According to court documents, the US Army’s top lawyer, Lieutenant General Dana Chipman allegedly placed Woolverton on the fast-track promotion list to Lieutenant Colonel shortly before he was arrested in October 2009 as Chipman was potentially grooming him for General Officer. The US Army Legal System has been criticized for other ills such as its known insular policy of appointing lawyers to investigate their personal friends when accused of wrongdoing by non-lawyers. Moreover, the US Army is the only uniformed service or federal agency which does not require its lawyers to maintain law licenses with any state.

A U.S. Army major accused of videotaping and photographing himself raping an infant and disseminating the images on the Internet is expected to plead guilty Thursday, court records show.
Daniel A. Woolverton has been held without bail since he was taken into custody at his Arlington home in October. Calls to the 34-year-old Army trial lawyer's attorney were not immediately returned Wednesday.
The investigation into Woolverton started May 22 when an undercover FBI agent downloaded child pornographic images from a peer-to-peer software user named "Veronica_S2000," court documents said. Investigators later linked the account to an Internet Protocol address assigned to Woolverton at his Arlington home.

It is impossible for me to say what I think he deserves. His wife is a attorney? She should thank her lucky stars that he was stung... OMG.

What the heck is wrong with people??? I mean honestly - he seemed to have a successful life. Why? Why would he even THINK to do something so horrible? I just don't get it.

This "man" makes me believe in the death penalty again.

And I hope when he goes to jail, they let him loose in the general population, and maybe the security cameras in that area might all need their annual battery change exactly at the same time.

Let his fellow inmates serve him some justice. His kind are the lowest on the food chain inside.

This is what I was worried about. I have not heard whether or not the child/children is/are physically okay. A 2-6 month old baby escaping that without physical injury would be difficult. I guess I have to trust that the child is alright.

They said that items from his home, the rooms in his home as well as his watch were how they proved it was him. They also said they found the bib the baby was wearing in his family vehicle.

If this occurred in his home... and all of the items in the video were found in his home... that certainly implies to me that the victim(s) would also be in the home. I feel horrible for his poor (ex I assume) wife. As if it wouldn't be bad enough to find out your husband had done this. Facing the possibility of it being your own child would just make it that much more horrendous. Not to mention they believe there could be more victims as well.

The FBI was able to identify the infant but has not released details to protect the victim's privacy.

Authorities remain concerned that there might be other victims in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 202-278-2000.

LadyL - I fortunately don't get it either. A child is horrific... a baby is worse.... your OWN child or baby is as bad as it gets. All I can give you is what is in this same article.

Authorities later dropped the rape charge, and Woolverton pleaded guilty to forcible sodomy late last month. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison, which will be served concurrently with the 27-year federal sentence he received for the child *advertiser censored* charges.

It says he was discharged from the military -- too good for him - I would think 'dishonorable' would be appropriate...defenitely behavior 'unbecoming an officer' wouldn't ya think?

I think the people that hurt children can't be rehibilitated at all. It is a lost cause to save these sick people. They have to have something seriously wrong in their heads and they have to know that what they are doing or did is not right. Sick Sick Sick world we live in folks.
