Still missing after 10 years
At first, there was nothing unusual.
Eric Pyles was in a good mood when he left for school about 7 a.m. Dec. 12, 2000, according to his older sister, Maria Fuhrman, with whom the 12-year-old boy lived on Awol Road in Union Township.
After his school day, Eric rode the bus back to Awol and Silvertown roads near I-78 and got off at 2:30 p.m.
He hasn't been seen since then - at least not by anyone who has said anything to his family or police.
Just two days before his disappearance, Eric had run away - something he had done about 15 times - but he returned a half-hour later. The other times he had always returned within a couple hours, Fuhrman said.
Sometimes he talked about going back to Virginia. He tried unsuccessfully to hitch rides with strangers at least a couple times.
While he sometimes didn't come straight home after his bus ride, Fuhrman said she suspected something was wrong immediately on Dec. 12, 2000, and called state police.
A day later, Fuhrman's family, neighbors, Lickdale Fire Co. volunteers and others searched dense woods near the Pyles home, aided by bloodhounds that picked up Eric's scent. A state police helicopter was later brought in to search the area - all to no avail.
There aren't any leads or suspects?
Just two days before his disappearance, Pyles ran away - something he had done more than a dozen times - but he returned a half-hour later. The other times he had always returned within a couple hours.
Pyles sometimes talked about going back to Virginia and tried unsuccessfully to hitch rides with strangers several times.
Police investigated the possibility that Pyles might have returned to the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia, where his parents and other relatives live, but there were no leads.
In the meantime, police obtained DNA samples from his parents, so investigators can match those results with DNA from any suspicious or unidentified bodies that may be found.
