Date Of Birth: February 20, 1988
Age: 12 years old
Height and Weight: 4'8, 95 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Caucasian male. Blond hair, brown eyes. Pyles's hair was collar-length at the time of his disappearance, much longer than pictured in the photograph above. He has a scar near the right side of his waistline. Pyles may use the aliases Nick Cagnow and/or Nick Seaboy. Some agencies may spell his first name "Erik" and his middle name "Wayna."
Clothing/Jewelry Description: A gray sweatshirt with an image of a deer imprinted on the front, light blue jeans or pants, black sneakers, and a blue flannel jacket.

Details of Disappearance

Pyles exited his Northern Lebanon school bus near the intersection of US Route 22 and Pennsylvania Route 72 in Union Township, Pennsylvania on December 12, 2000. He was last seen walking behind the Jonestown Bible Church, towards a wooded area near US Route 22, at approximately 2:30 p.m. He was carrying a Washington Redskins book bag at the time of his disappearance. Pyles has never been heard from again.

Pyles and his younger brother resided with their older sister, Maria Custer, and her husband and three children in 2000. Their parents reside in Luray, Virginia. Custer took custody of the two boys after their parents allegedly neglected them. Custer stated both of her brothers had behavioral problems. Pyles rebelled against Custer's rules and curfews by running away several times in the past, but he always returned by nightfall. Custer said that Pyles used the first name "Nick" as an alias because he took the name while playing 'school' as a young child. He also told people he was from Cleona, Pennsylvania, but his sister reported that Pyles was unfamiliar with the town. He has been known to hitchhike in the past.

Custer enrolled Pyles in counseling sessions after he moved to Pennsylvania. He was an in-patient at Philhaven Behavioral Healthcare Services two times. Authorities said that there were unconfirmed sightings of Pyles at the Mount Gretna Roller Rink and other local areas after his disappearance. His case remains unsolved.

Custer has since remarried and taken the last name Fuhrman. She has passed a lie detector test in connection with Pyles's disappearance and police do not believe she was involved in his disappearance or harmed him in any way before he vanished. Authorities investigated the possibility that Pyles ran to the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia where his parents and other relatives live. They questioned several of his family members there, but the interviews turned up no leads indicating Pyles's whereabouts and it is not believed he ever arrived in Virginia.

The Jonestown station of the Pennsylvania State Police is handling Pyles's case.

Still missing after 10 years

At first, there was nothing unusual.

Eric Pyles was in a good mood when he left for school about 7 a.m. Dec. 12, 2000, according to his older sister, Maria Fuhrman, with whom the 12-year-old boy lived on Awol Road in Union Township.

[snip]

After his school day, Eric rode the bus back to Awol and Silvertown roads near I-78 and got off at 2:30 p.m.

He hasn't been seen since then - at least not by anyone who has said anything to his family or police.

[snip]

Just two days before his disappearance, Eric had run away - something he had done about 15 times - but he returned a half-hour later. The other times he had always returned within a couple hours, Fuhrman said.

Sometimes he talked about going back to Virginia. He tried unsuccessfully to hitch rides with strangers at least a couple times.

While he sometimes didn't come straight home after his bus ride, Fuhrman said she suspected something was wrong immediately on Dec. 12, 2000, and called state police.

A day later, Fuhrman's family, neighbors, Lickdale Fire Co. volunteers and others searched dense woods near the Pyles home, aided by bloodhounds that picked up Eric's scent. A state police helicopter was later brought in to search the area - all to no avail.

Police investigated the possibility that Pyles might have returned to the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia, where his parents and other relatives live, but there were no leads.

In the meantime, police obtained DNA samples from his parents, so investigators can match those results with DNA from any suspicious or unidentified bodies that may be found.

That 12 year old boy has been missing for over 15 years now...I doubt he is still alive sadly.

Eric was last seen on Dec. 12, 2000 near his home in Union Township. He was last seen wearing light blue pants, black sneakers and a gray sweatshirt with a deer print on it. He may use the name Nick.

Police said in 2018 that he was originally from Luray, Va., and his parents were living there when he disappeared. He had a history of running away, but usually came back after a few hours, police said.

Missing persons: In Pennsylvania, how many are lost and from where?

Why don't they keep the public informed (the ones who have put in time and energy looking for this young man)n any information. Did you find something, did you not, are there new leads, are there not.

COLD CASE: 20th anniversary of the disappearance of Eric Pyles | fox43.com
''Eric Pyles was reported missing Dec. 12, 2000 and still there is no sign of him''

''Police said Eric Pyles never made it home after getting off the school bus, and to this day no one knows what happened to him.

Not a day goes by that 30 -year-old Thomas Pyles doesn't think of his big brother, Eric.

"I have a 5-year-old that looks just like him," Thomas said. "They could be identical."

''Eric got off the bus at Awol and Silvertown Roads. Witnesses said instead of heading towards his house, he walked toward the direction of Jonestown Bible Church. Not much else is known.

"There was a secretary here that saw a young boy with a Redskins backpack, presumably Eric Pyles," Trooper Daniel Womer, criminal investigation assessment officer working on the case, said. "We believe it was Eric Pyles that used the restroom. Then later that night when she locked up she saw footprints in the snow. And that's all we really know."

''Investigators ask that you contact them if you have any information at all, even if it seems insignificant. The number to the Jonestown Barricks is 717-865-2914.''
