Workers discover bones: Old publication among items found in May Brothers

Workers refurbishing the burned out former May Brothers building uncovered a “history mystery” yesterday under the main stairway leading to the second floor.

While cleaning up the building’s first floor, a crew member discovered several bones amid an assortment of old papers and dusty bottles underneath the staircase.

According to Bartlesville Police Chief Tom Holland, the remains could be either that of a human or an animal. Holland believes the dirt-stained bones most likely date from “some time ago.”

“Right now, we can’t determine what kind of bones these are,” said Holland. “We intend to send what’s discovered to the state medical examiner’s office, where they can identify whether the bones are human and how old they are.”

Perhaps a significant age indicator in the case lies within “The Journeyman Barber,” a decaying publication dated March 1922 that was discovered near the unearthed bones.

“It will be interesting (to) go back and look at the historic records from this time and see if there were any missing person cases back then,” said Holland.
