Jonathan Fosters death causes councilwoman to cry at meeting
A Houston city councilwoman, outraged at the senseless death of Jonathan Foster, broke down in tears Wednesday during a council meeting where she spoke about his murder.
KHOU reports that Council Member Brenda Stardig asked for a moment of silence to remember the 12-year-old boy, who’s been described as sweet, respectful, innocent, and caring.
“If we could just take a moment of silence to remember Jonathan’s energetic and sweet spirit,” said Stardig.

To catch and release a killer
Titus County's reputation was sullied recently with the revelation that a long-time resident, Mona Nelson, was arrested as the suspect in the murder of 12-year old Jonathan Foster, who disappeared in Houston on Christmas Eve.
As we wrote on Dec. 31, Nelson was arrested ten times from 1991 to 2008 in Titus County for offenses ranging from traffic fines to family violence and assault, according to our jail records.
The last time she was arrested, in 2008, was for three counts of Injury to a Child - a fact mentioned by other media in Houston and elsewhere.

Police still want to know why Houston boy was killed
Hours after Christmas Day dinner at her sister's Third Ward apartment, Mona Yvette Nelson, a nomadic 44-year-old maintenance worker, was jolted by a TV news report detailing the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonathan Foster from a ramshackle Garden Oaks enclave.
"I know those people," she reportedly told her sister, Angie Johnson, 62, after watching Jonathan's mother, Angela Davis, plead for help in finding her son.
Four days later, Nelson found herself in a Harris County jail cell, charged in the boy's slaying as veteran homicide detectives with uncharacteristic candor painted her a monster.

    Accused killer takes stand

    By Cindy Horswell | August 13, 2013 | Updated: August 13, 2013 12:18pm

    Houston Chronicle - Houston, TX

Mona Nelson, the accused killer of a 12-year-old boy, testified Tuesday that she never felt free to leave when officers brought her in for hours of questioning at Houston police headquarters.

"They would say you are free to go if you want to," Nelson said, adding that when she moved toward the door investigators would say "hold on, just give us a few more minutes." This happened before she was officially arrested in the Christmas eve 2010 disappearance and death of Jonathan Foster.

HOUSTON (AP) — Attorneys for a woman on trial this week in the capital murder case of a 12-year-old Houston boy who disappeared Christmas Eve 2010 are fighting to have statements she made to investigators suppressed, claiming they were coerced.

Woman accused of kidnapping and killing Houston boy in 2010 goes on trial today
The trial begins today for the woman accused of kidnapping and murdering a boy.
Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. Nelson has asked for a judge instead of a jury to decide the verdict.

Defense seeks to throw out murder suspect's statements
The defense in a capital murder case on Monday asked a Houston judge to quash statements made by the woman accused of the kidnap-murder of a 12-year-old boy on Christmas Eve 2010, saying she was sick and exhausted after hours of interrogation.
The defendant, Mona Nelson, has taken the unusual step of having her capital murder case heard by a judge, not a jury. The trial opened Monday before Houston District Judge Jeannine Barr.
