We live about two miles away. My son attends Millard West and was in lockdown much of the afternoon.
Local media reporting the shooter was a cop's son, unconfirmed report is that he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Just picked my son up at school, major traffic jam as lots of parents apparently decided to not let their kids walk home. More later..

Student opens fire at Omaha high school, 2 wounded

A student opened fire at an Omaha high school on Wednesday wounding two adults including the principal and causing students to rush to a school kitchen to take cover, authorities said.

Later, the suspect, identified as 17-year-old Robert Butler, Jr., was found dead in car about a mile away from the school after shooting himself, Omaha police chief Alex Hayes said.

It was not immediately clear why Butler, a son of an Omaha police detective, shot Millard High School Principal Curtis Case and Vice Principal Vicki Kasper.

Case was in stable condition and Kasper was in critical condition at an area hospital, the chief told reporters.

2 injured in Omaha high school shooting

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40929538/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

The son of a police detective shot and wounded the principal and assistant principal of his high school on Wednesday, then shot himself in his car a few blocks away, authorities said.
Robert Butler, Jr., 17, who transferred in November to Millard South High school, left a suicide note on the social media site that said the school "drove me to this."

There's been a lot of confusion of the spelling of Dr. Vicki Caspar's name. I believe Caspar is correct:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/us_shoot...lYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcnkEc2xrA3R3b3ByaW5jaXBhbA--

The principal, Curtis Case, was in stable but serious condition at Creighton University Medical Center, according to spokeswoman KA. He had been at the school for five or six years, Millard Schools Superintendent Keith Lutz said.

Assistant principal Vicki Caspar was in critical condition. She was a veteran administrator at the school, Lutz said...."

I always worry so much about VPs. They often have to do the discipline and usually manage all the special ed students. This boy had just been suspended on the first day back from break. He'd driven his car on the football field. No doubt he'd been in Dr. Caspar's office a number of times, by the sound of his suicide note.

My prayers are with all those students and families.

ETA: CORRECTION:

According to Millard High's FB page:

It is Dr. Vicki Kaspar. FWIW, there are five assistant principals as the school is quite large--over 2100 students.

Friends say Omaha school gunman was fun, outgoing

"An angry online posting from the 17-year-old boy who opened fire at a Nebraska high school, killing an assistant principal before later fatally shooting himself, offers some clues about why the son of a police detective turned violent a couple of months after transferring there.

As authorities work to sort out what may have led to Wednesday's shooting, those who knew Robert Butler Jr. are struggling to reconcile his final actions with their memories of the fun, outgoing student who liked to make jokes and sometimes got into trouble for talking in class...."

This is so very sad.

RIP Dr. Kaspar.

Snick, I'm glad your son is ok and hope he isn't too traumatized. Please keep us posted on any new updates.

I hesitated to post this but there are rumors circulating that the young man involved was gay; he was being bullied. It would all fit, students commenting on him have told news media that he was a colorful dresser and he seems to have been very friendly with some of the girls and no so with the male students. His dad was in LE and if that was the case somehow I think there mightn have been resulting tension there.
Nothing of course ever justifies what he did. It may however fill in some gaps. Time will tell.

Snick--I'm so relieved your son is OK but be prepared for it to "hit" him in a few days. I think posting the comment that the killer might have gay is extremely pertinent. You are right that nothing justifies this type of violence but possibly he had simply snapped if he'd been bullied. And to have a father in such a male-dominated field would be tough.

Our schools have the same policy about suspensions. The student sits in the office until a parent arrives to pick them up. They are not allowed to drive themselves, even if they have a car at the school. It's just plain common sense. I'm hoping a full investigation into the process of suspension is done here.

Sadly, nothing can bring back that Vice Principal. Dr. Case, the Principal, is in stable condition. I still haven't read how serious his injuries are.

Salem I understand completely. However my posts about the WBC on this thread sort of vanished in the process. Did you delete them in order to start over with a new thread? Thanks.
