NJ NJ - Depford, WhtFem 16-20, UP1489, in woods, pearl necklace, sweatpants, Feb'90

My instincts say - not a match.

1. Deviated septum to the right with a crooked filtrum - likely to have been noted in any missing report :(

2. Although age is right, height and weight are just outside the ranges (to make a match less likely, but not impossible);

3. Clothing not a match. Jewelry is really not that similar (no rings/necklace apiece) and one earring is similar but a very popular style at the time;

4. Date of recovery was with an estimate of one year's decomposition, not two weeks, a factor of approximately 25:1 greater time.

Susietigger,

Keep up the good work. I also do not believe that this is a match. Mostly based on time estimates, clothing description and height/weight. Any one being off wouldn't really throw me off but the combiniation seems unlikely.

However, just based on the photos and reconstruction - a very good likeness. Keep up your hard work and you will find a match.

Thanks! I was thinking probably not. But I wanted your "experienced" advice :)

I don't believe this has been posted yet. This is my first post so I apologize if I did not search thoroughly. This poor unidentified girl has haunted me since I was little. Her remains were discovered very near where I grew up and I would really love her family to know where she is and what happened to her.

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/121ufnj.html

Skeletal remains of a young Caucasian female were discovered February 4, 1990 in Deptford Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey. It is believed she was strangled with a ligature around 1 year prior to her discovery (January 1989). She is estimated to be between 16 and 20 years old (born between 1969-1973). She has brown hair, was between 5'5-5'8, and weighed between 120-145 pounds. She has a deviated septum.

There were some clothing and jewelry found near the body, and are believed to be hers: sweatpants, socks, stockings, pantyhose, 16-inch faux pearl necklace, 1 yellow ball stud earring, and 1 yellow wreath-like earring.

I would be very interested to hear what theories and possible matches everyone comes up with.

before looking for any matches I can give this much info as you are aware KG. the area is not far off from the NJ Turnpike which handles traffic up and down the eastern seaboard so she could be from anywhere on the east coast.

as for the UID, a fairly narrow age range is given 16-20 yet the composites make her look much older. the jewelry seems odd. I think in the late 80's faux pearls were rather popular but the pearls and the wreath earring just don't seem (to me) what a late teenager would be sporting.

The area is pretty close to the turnpike--it's even closer to route 42 which leads to, among other places, Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Route 55 is also very close. I know they were doing some highway construction around the time the body was discovered, I think on 55.

I also agree, the composite and the style of jewelry appears a bit more mature than 16-20. I was thinking early to mid-twenties. Although it is entirely possible the jewelry didn't even belong to her. After all, they found two different earrings, and sweatpants and stockings? A weird fashion statement if you ask me.

:welcome:
Welcome to WS, kg0421.

What bothers me about this is that the three recons look very much different from each other. Their chins are very different in each of the three, and she has a much squarer jawline in the NCMEC recon (on the right in her DoeNet page). Also, if you look at the smiling recon (on the left), she appears to have two front teeth that overlap. But there is no mention of that in the description. Only the deviated septum and crooked philtrum (i.e., the vertical groove between the nose and upper lip) are mentioned. And the smiling recon is the only one that depicts that.

I ran a screen with generous parameters, and didn't come with much to get excited about. Anyone who looked close on other factors always turned out to be unlikely because of the teeth.

This one seems like quite a long shot. She doesn't resemble the facial reconstructions but I am putting it up because she has that same crooked smile that skews to the left, and her teeth on the upper left side have the same tilt.

After five years, and with erupting wisdom teeth, her dental alignment could have gotten worse. Her chin is not very close to this reconstruction, but it is quite similar to the chin on the NCMEC reconstruction. Her cheekbones aren't as broad either, but we have to consider how much her skull would change from the age of 12 to age 17.

I should have googled the anatomical term philtrum but it is not something I've seen before. based on what I've seen this UID may have had a cleft lip that was surgically repaired at some time in her life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleft_lip_and_palate

It is possible that official photographs of a missing teenager (school photos in particular) may have been retouched. however, you would think that in the discussion of medical history, etc, there would be some mention of it.

this is another area where Namus's search criteria is wanting. how would one search for a crooked philtrum? Namus's search menu gives the following choices:

"deformities"
"scars and marks" or
"other physical characteristics"

without any regard to gender or race, I put the word philtrum in each of the three categories and there was not one match.

I then put cleft under "deformities" and got 6 matches. Similarly I did a search putting cleft under "scars and marks" and got 8 matches. looking at them, the cleft referred to a chin and not a palate or upper lip.

one person matched putting cleft in the "other physical characteristics".

I tried doing a search with an unspecified scar or mark just adding "lip" and got a number of matches, none of which seemed to match this UID.

very frustrating for those who are trying to help.

There is more information on her dentals here.

"Overjet - Open bite. An occlusal filling on tooth #15 possibly fell out. It is possible that teeth #19 and #30 were extracted at an early age and that we actually have teeth #'s 17 and 18 and #'s 31 and 32.There are only 2 molars on each side. The first molar on right side has an occlusal amalgam.
The first molar on the left side has an occlusal facial amalgam."

From what I've been reading isn't it generally accepted that Martha Jean was murdered by her brother? I guess there is always the possibility she was abducted or ran away but she also has blonde hair while Jane Doe has brown.

Here are some of the possibles I've seen:

Amber Carrie Potts
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/312dfon.html

Christine Marie Miller--I just wish they had a better picture of her!
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/2615dfok.html

I did like Tracy Kroh for her as well but according to namus she has been ruled out as a possible. Bummer!

I see the UID also had a deviated septum. I looked it up and there is a relationship between a deviated septum and cleft lip:

http://ent.about.com/od/entdisordersdf/a/Deviated_Septum.htm

so here we have a woman who had significant medical treatment at least in her early days and even had tooth extractions. she was well cared for (it would seem) in her childhood.

the only person I could find, and she is out of the stated age range is Susan Cappel, age 20 in 1982. she was stated as being 5'4" which is just under the range of the UID. she had both a cleft lip and a nasal fracture (I know it's not the same as a deviated septum).

https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/7928/2/

her Charley Project page gives more information and has some frontal shots of her face and teeth.

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/cappel_susan.html

given the nature of the circumstances of her disappearance, I doubt it's her but there are not many missing persons with these attributes.

She came up on my screen, and she does have a very similar facial structure. Her height at age 15 was a little low even if you figure that she was probably still growing. Also, I was looking for MP's with deformities around their upper lip, or teeth that were askew like Jane Doe's. Her upper lip looks perfectly straight, and of course, you can't see her teeth to compare on that basis.

However, none of these points would be a solid reason to rule her out. They probably should check her out.

BTW, I was looking pretty close at Amber Carrie Potts, but moved on based on the description that her "teeth were in good condition", and there were no obvious issues with her philtrum. However, that's not a solid reason to exclude either.

The earrings could have been a double piercing. Hoop in the first hole and stud in the 2nd. That was popular in the 80s.

Sweatpants with pantyhose and pears however... that one has me baffled.

I know the date of missing and the found date of the UID is 10 years apart which seems to scream not a match but if she was kidnapped into human trafficking then it could be a possible explanation, especially due to the fact the UID was found in NJ. As well as explain the odd clothing and jewelry found on the UID
