WA - Potentially Lethal Backpack Bomb Defused on Spokane MLK Parade Route

There are a number of articles coming up on this topic. This is the first I have heard of it. FBI is categorizing it as 'domestic terrorism'.

Potentially Lethal Backpack Bomb Defused on Spokane MLK Parade Route

"A suspicious backpack discovered along the route of the Martin Luther King Jr. march in Spokane contained a bomb “capable of inflicting multiple casualties,” the FBI said Tuesday.

The FBI said the bomb was found about 9:25 a.m. PST on Monday on a bench at the northeast corner of North Washington Street and West Main Avenue in downtown Spokane.

A bomb disposal unit neutralized the device. The FBI said is a statement that “the backpack contained a potentially deadly destructive device, likely capable of inflicting multiple casualties.”"

There was more than one bomb in the backpack and there is a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever made the device.

SPOKANE - The FBI is still looking for whoever left a bomb in Spokane along the route of Monday's Martin Luther King, Jr. parade.

Investigators say the device was capable of inflicting mass casualties, but a ground maintenance crew found the backpack on a bench, and authorities re-routed the parade. Police ended up evacuating some nearby streets for nine hours on Monday.

Suspect In MLK Day Bomb Charged With Attempted Use Of WMD
    Eric Lach | March 9, 2011, 3:51PM

"The man arrested in connection with a bomb found along a Martin Luther King Day parade route in Spokane, Wash., earlier this year is Kevin William Harpham, 36, of Colville, Wash. Harpham has been charged in U.S. District Court with one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and one count of knowingly possessing an improvised explosive device.

Earlier, The Seattle Times reported that law enforcement was preparing " to search a house where others associated with the suspect were living" and that the suspects in the case "are apparently affiliated with white supremacists.""

"Late Update: The Southern Poverty Law Center tells tells The Spokesman-Review that Harpham was a member of a white supremacist organization."

There are probably some other recent articles, but I just now happened to notice this one, so read it.
