    The Freedom of Information Act

I had a member ask me about this today. Has anyone filed for this to obtain information about a case? I'm thinking it might be very handy when sleuthing Cold Cases?

Following my daughter's murder in California, the police refused to give up ANY information to a private investigator "because the case is ongoing." In short, if the case is open, none of the information is public. Unfortunately, cold cases are still active cases.

There are similar Acts at the state level. I think it would be good to post them as we come across them.

Here is New Jersey's Open Public Records Act.

And New York's Freedom of Information Law
