Such a shame. Regardless of her activities no-one deserves to die like this. May she finally find the peace she was seeking.

TORONTO - Joanne Mitchell was a slight woman whose health wasn't the greatest after years of drinking.

Toronto police said the 60-year-old woman was beaten to death in her seventh-floor apartment at 460 Jarvis St. on the weekend.

"It's a horrific murder," Homicide Det.-Sgt. Brian Borg said of the slaying, the city's sixth of 2011.

He said the coroner completed an autopsy and found Mitchell died of "multiple blunt-impact head injuries."

Borg refused to talk about the specifics of the killing for fear of tainting the case.

"We're still investigating," he said.

Police were waiting for a search warrant Tuesday in order for forensics officers to enter the apartment and begin gathering evidence.

Has some interesting comments ( tenants) http://www.vancouverite.com/2011/01/25/elderly-toronto-woman-hammered-to-death/

I work very near the building where this woman was murdered and I'm pretty sure I've seen her walking around the neighborhood. There has been an arrest, and it looks like it was her boyfriend.

"Jody George, 38, of no fixed address, is charged with second-degree murder and is to appear in College Park court Friday morning."

RIP Joanne

She was featured in a Toronto Star article in August. Perhaps the "ex-boyfriend" that's mentioned is the individual that was charged?

...When I met back up with her at Union Station on that rainy afternoon and explained that I was a journalist, she reported the prepaid card had promptly been taken from her from by an “ex-boyfriend.”

She did not put up a fight.

“I can’t,” she said, “I have a broken arm.”

The card, which can be traced, was used to buy fast food and alcohol.

From October 2012:

A severe alcoholic who killed a vulnerable grandmother with a hammer was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Monday.

Jody George — who pleaded guilty to manslaughter — was extremely intoxicated when he crushed the skull of Joanne Mitchell with a hammer, killing her almost instantaneously on Jan. 23, 2011, only days after he was freed from Maplehurst Detention Centre.
