UT-Army Dugway Proving Grounds on Lockdown

I have no idea what the situation is other than no official will state the reason for the lockdown. One of the news stations reported that they refused to state what the problem is. The facility is where the Army tests and destroy chemical weapons. I'm kind of irked as only one newstation reported this story a little after 8pm and the lockdown started at 5:24pm. There were about 1400 people on site when the lockdown occured.

I wish officials would state whether we should be worried. That facility and a few others is why we have sirens stationed throughout my town. I've been out here 11 years and have not seen a lockdown that they won't talk about.

Al Vogel, a public affairs specialist for the installation, would only say that the lockdown began at 5:24 p.m. Employees were not allowed to leave, and those coming to work were not allowed in. Vogel said there were no injuries, no damage and no threats reported at the proving ground

ETA: now people are posting Stephen King jokes......yikes.

    What Dugway is.....

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=14154471

Dugway encompasses more than 800,000 acres of Utah's west desert, where more than 2,000 people call home. It is a government-owned facility used by U.S. Army Reserves and U.S. National Guard for maneuver training. It is also a U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command center where tests are occasionally run on defenses against biological and chemical weaponry.

Dugway Proving Ground is a chemical and biological proving ground which is as large as the state of Rhode Island. It serves as a test facility for weapon defense systems.

ABC spoke with Paula Thomas who is the Public Affairs Officer for Dugway. Thomas is unable to release much information at this time. However she did say that the post commander ordered two of the gates closed. No additional information was given.

I'm not sure I'm buying what Col. King is selling. Hold a 1000 people for what????

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=14154471

Reports of nearly 1,000 employees stranded at the base, some in their cars, went unconfirmed but Dugway Proving Ground Commander Col. William E. King, IV, said food and beverages were being brought in.
"As you know measures like these (lockdown of our gates) are not taken lightly," he said. "No one is in immediate danger but these steps are required." King said he would open the gates "as soon as I can." The gates to the facility were closed prior to the 5:30 p.m. shift ending. Workers normally scheduled to go home were not allowed to leave, while those coming into the area were also not let in.

    Quote from the same article...

"The U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Ground was on lockdown Wednesday evening as part of "an ongoing security operation," according to spokeswoman Paula Thomas."

I'm not sure I'm buying it wither, SuziQ.

And does the new spokesman have to be named Col. King? I guess that's better than Capt Tripp.

So is Dominos delivering out there? Lucky pizza guy....

I shouldn't joke I know. But I'm a little stressed out about this. Poor pregnant lady must be even more stressed out.

Much better name than Capt. Tripp. I would think they could have chosen a spokesman with a different name though. :-)

I can't even imagine how the pregnant lady is feeling. The stress of this can't be good for her or her baby. I hope they're both okay.

    Laughter can help relieve stress. {hug}

Dugway Proving Ground Commander, Colonel William E. King IV was quoted saying:

"We are working as quickly and as thoroughly as possible to resolve a serious concern within the Test Area. As you know measures like these (lock down of our gates) are not taken lightly. No one is in immediate danger but these steps are required. Please be tolerate and know as soon as I can open the gates and allow free flowing traffic I will. Until then we are working to have food and beverages brought to DITTO diner for those west of ACP2 and for those east and within EV the club and subway have remained open as are our other support services."

It would have been nice if he would have addressed what this "serious concern in the test area" was. At least a tiny amount of additional information was given.

Why is there such a need to inform the press about food and beverages being brought in? Diversion, comes to mind.
