Alexandria Police Investigate Discovery of Skeletal Remains

Alexandria Police are investigating a suspicious event which occurred in the wooded area around Franklin Street and Union Street on Sunday, February 13. At approximately 8:00 a.m., a City resident was walking his dog in the wooded area around Ford’s Landing. During the walk his dog discovered what appeared to be human skeletal remains. Crime Scene Investigators and Detectives responded to investigate further with the assistance of a Fairfax County Police Department’s cadaver dog. The remains were collected and sent to the medical examiner’s office for further examination.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Section at 703.838.4444 or the Crime Solvers tip line at 703.838.4858.

Detectives would like to remind witnesses that they can remain anonymous.

Although it was reported to be near Franklin and Union, I'm guessing it's actually the wooded area to the south. I live near here and Old Town Alexandria is too heavily traveled via foot/bike/whatever for a body to have been at the intersection of Franklin/Union long enough to become skeletal remains, IMHO:

My first thought was Venus Stewart. DS could have taken this route from Colon Township, MI where he abducted/killed his wife to his home in Newport News, VA.

<snip>

Park police went to the public for help identifying the remains last week after their efforts to match the skeleton to a known missing person turned up few results.

<snip>

They’ve determined the skeleton’s gender is male and was between 30 and 40 years old. He was between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-10 and likely came from Southeast Asian ancestry, including Vietnamese, Indian, Laotian or Cambodian, Schlosser said.

He died about a year-and-a-half to two years before his remains were found, but the cause of death remains unknown.

In life, the man suffered from torticollis/wry neck. Authorities believe his head would have naturally tilted down and to the left and he might have compensated by thrusting out a shoulder. He also would have complained of neck pain.

After examining his skull, officials also discovered he had a deciduous right incisor, essentially a tooth that would have overlapped other teeth and stuck out slightly. Based on wear and tear on the bones of his lower body, authorities believe he habitually squatted.

<snip>

Schlosser urges anyone with information about the body’s identity to contact the U.S. Park Police tip line at 202-610-8737. Callers can remain anonymous.

Hazura Singh, perhaps? What do you guys think?

It looks based on the description that he would be from Southeast Asia (i.e., Vietnam, Laus, Cambodia, or Thailand) and not East Indian as Hazura Singh appears to be. This assumption is somewhat strengthened by the comment that the UID was a "habitual squatter". I've been in Vietnam, and one thing that you immediately notice is that when they are just standing around talking to each other, they do so while standing in a squatting position.

This is Bum Suh. He is a dependent adult and sometimes there are physical issues that go along with mental challenges. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot listed about him.

The timeline is a little tight, but he otherwise fits the description.

Thanks for weighing in! They mentioned Indian, but that didn't fit in line with the other races to me at ALL.

Bum Suh seems way more likely.

I think Bum Suh looks possible for this IUD as well. I agree that the physical issues often go along with the mental ones.

It is also very possible that the IUD was a recent illegal immigrant (if he spent much of his life squatting, it probably wasn't in the US), which means he would be extremely difficult to trace.

Here's a photo illustrating what I meant by the Vietnamese being "habitual squatters".

Zabullah Alam.
Some things fit for him and some dont.

I don't think this could be a match. In the photo of Zabullah he tends to have more mobility on the left side of his neck than someone with Torticollis/Wry neck.

My son was born with tort and without a lot of physical therapy or in some cases surgery, iirc, one is very limited to the muscle movement on the affected side.

I'd expect to see something that looks like a shortened area on the left side. Think along the lines of a 45 degree range of movement or something similiar. I just don't see that in Alam's photo.

As in my previous post, I am not seeing the limited range of motion one would have with torticollis on the second photo of Bum when he is looking to the right which would need a full range of motion of the left neck muscles. I don't see the forward thrust of the left shoulder as described either.

I don't know how many WS'rs are familiar with tort, so let me try and give an example. Think of a shortened muscle which would need to be stretched to elongate it for a full normal range of motion.

I am not sure how that would look or which muscles we should be looking at ,so I googled images and it looks as if it can vary greatly ,is this incorrect?

this MP makes the most sense but he is a bit tall as compared to the UID (6'0" compared to 5'3" - 5'10" for the UID). despite the name - John Randolph Parsons - he is Asian. was missing from Washington DC in April 2009 (a little short on the time frame), had mental health issues and in his pic he is looking down.

with that name, however, I can't say that he had acquired the habits of SE Asians of squatting.
