"It just seems too coincidental that all this is going on," said Tom Chipman, whose own daughter, 22-year-old Tamara Chipman of Terrace, was last seen hitchhiking along the same highway in September 2005.

    CBC News

The RCMP have launched a homicide investigation into the death of a 14-year-old Aboriginal girl whose remains were found on the outskirts of Prince George last week.

Aielah Katherina Saric had been missing for more than a week, and had been last spotted alive near a bar in the inner city.

Her family had reported her missing, and had plastered the downtown area with missing posters, asking for any information as to her whereabouts.

A passing motorist found Saric's remains while travelling on Highway 16 east of Prince George last Friday. The RCMP were called in and an investigation was launched.

RCMP spokesperson Const. Gary Godwin now says she was murdered.

Mother walks 'highway of tears' in memory of slain girl

    CBC News

A woman plans to walk 722 kilometres along the "highway of tears" between two northern B.C. communities to help herself heal after losing her 14-year-old daughter in a highway killing in February 2006.

Audrey Auger said her daughter, Aielah Katherina Saric, went missing last year and was later found dead along Highway 16, east of Prince George.

Auger hopes the journey will "help me live again, to find my strength and know who I am in the role of a woman.

"I'm not there yet, but I'm getting there — baby steps, they say, and that's what I'm taking right now."

Auger and a group of youths will start their 722-kilometre journey this Sunday in Prince Rupert.

Police are clear that Aielah was not hitchhiking or engaging in any high-risk activity that day; she is on their list because her remains were found so close to the highway.

Aielah's is a heartbreaking story, which is perhaps best illustrated by how infrequently her family has been willing to speak publicly about their loss.

A family friend, Cheryl Kosy, released a statement on behalf of Aielah's parents shortly after her death. It thanked the police for their work, and Aielah's school and the community for its support during such a difficult time.

The statement reads, in part, "[The Prince George Native Friendship Centre] have walked alongside us since the start of this tragedy and have respected our need to grieve and lay our little girl to rest. Our loss and the pain we are experiencing will forever change our lives."
