Vigils honour hundreds of missing aboriginal women

Dozens of vigils were held across the country Sunday to remember more than 500 aboriginal women who have vanished in the last three decades and to draw attention to what organizers called a national tragedy.

"We call for a national plan of action that recognizes the violence faced by aboriginal women because they are aboriginal," organizer Alana Lee said as sweetgrass smoke hung heavy in the air.

"Violence against aboriginal women is too big a problem to ignore."

***

"We all have a responsibility that if we see something that we don't approve of, speak up, say something because you never know, that might be the call that actually saves someone's life," she said through tears.

***

"It's because of the systemic structures of poverty, colonization and racism."

The Canadian government is unwilling to protect First Nations women from the violence, Reynolds said.

Today is Mother's Day ... it is not natural that parents are left with only a memory of their children on Mother's Day. Here is a mother who can never forget. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that Verna's mother is just one of so many parents who do not know where their children are.

Walk4Justice arrives at Ryerson
B.C.-based activist group Walk4Justice makes a pitstop at Ryerson University en route to Ottawa to raise awareness of the alarmingly high number of aboriginal women who have gone missing or been murdered over the past 15 years.

Last night, half a dozen men and women completed the most recent leg of their walking journey from Vancouver to Ottawa by holding a demonstration at Ryerson University to raise awareness of the thousands of women who have been murdered or have gone missing over the past 15 years. Under the moniker Walk4Justice, members of the aboriginal group took turns recounting their heartbreaking stories of personal loss, many of which shared an eerie similarity in the fact that the cases still remain unresolved.

“When I wake up I’m brown, and when I go to bed I’m brown. And it sometimes feels like it’s a crime to be an aboriginal woman,” said Bernie Williams, who, along with Gladys Radek co-founded the Walk4Justice initiative to give a voice to the families of the murdered or missing women who feel powerless against a justice system they fear has failed them
