Ignas was just 14 when she disappeared on Dec. 13, 1974 in Thornhill, along Highway 16.

The young teenager's decomposed, partially-clad body was found by police and tracking dogs four months later, on April 6, 1975, in dense bush near a private logging road, six kilometres northeast of Terrace.

Police said she had been strangled. Investigators believed Monica had been hitchhiking but Monica was a quiet Grade 10 student and her family said she typically did not hitchhike.

Some consider the murder of Monica Ignas, 15, to be the first. She disappeared just east of Terrace on December 13, 1974 and was later found lying dead and discarded in a gravel pit.
