He has demanded the protesters hand in their guns and army stolen from the police and the army, so that the peaceful protesters in support of "his revolution" could take to the streets.

This is fast becoming a regional crisis with Gadaffi speaking very aggresively.

And if you think it wont affect you here in the west, think again. He mentioned halting export of oil from the region - that would put the price of oil even higher. This is in danger of esculating out of hand, quick."

CNN: Video has been posted on YouTube of what CNN is told are six badly burned bodies of Libyan soldiers in open body bags.

The video, taken on a cell phone, was posted on Monday. It is not known when it was taken. Opposition sources in Libya say the bodies are of soldiers who refused to shoot at anti-government demonstrators.

He just doesn't get it does he? How can he expect to be leader of a country when he has killed his own people.
I hope that the days of these mini dictatorships are over:maddening:
 
I love Africa and I am thrilled that the dictatorship of several African countries has been wiped out the past years.

The transition into democracy will by no means be easy, but the countries are on the right way.

Boy, you got that right. It is crazy out there. Kind of reminds me of the movie Children of Men. Anyhow, I heard a report today that stated the protesters intend to halt oil exportation until they can oust Kadafi. Interesting.

Kadafi reminds me of an old, tattered beast of some sort. He is repulsive. A martyr? Wait, aren't martyrs people who are willing to die for a just case or belief, not criminals who have stolen from their people and tortured them when they complained about it? The man is deluded.

The son of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, Seif al-Islam, has rejected reports that more than 250 people have been killed in the ongoing unrest in the country.


In a televised speech on Sunday, Seif al-Islam said protesters attacked the roadblocks in Benghazi because they were furious, and 84 people were killed since the onset of massive demonstrations six days ago, Xinhua reported.

Earlier on Sunday, security forces opened fire on thousands of people who had gathered to mourn for those killed on Saturday clashes in the eastern city of Benghazi.

Seif al-Islam also said that dozens of protesters were arrested, including some campaigners, and the unrest was a plot against Libya orchestrated by foreign elements in the country.

Gaddafi's 38-year-old son further rejected widespread speculations that Libya may be the next country after Tunisia and Egypt to see popular revolution.

He emphasized that Libya is different from the two other African states and any separation will make the country fall back to the situation 60 or 70 years ago.

Seif al-Islam also warned of civil war in Libya and denied reports that his father has left the country for Venezuela.

According to a story I read a few years ago, Gadaffi is a heravy drug user/abuser. He smokes a lot of hashish. Just from looking at him I could have told that. Now he's acting out the paranoid delusional effects that long use of this stuff creates.
This guy is going down, big time. I look for him to die when his palace burns.

In 2005, I had the opportunity to travel outside of the US for the first time in my life. It was to Libya. I was with a delegation of women who attempt to forge friendships with our peers in countries not known to have "friendly" relations with the US. It was an amazing experience for me on so many different levels. The Libyan people were warm and gracious. They wanted us to know they were not their leader. They want the same things for their families that we want for ours. I have been watching events unfold with fear for those I met in Libya yet elation that perhaps they will be able to break free of the oppression of many years.

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Three Dutch marines are being held by authorities in Libya after they were captured by forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi while trying to rescue Dutch workers, a Defense Ministry spokesman said Thursday.
The three were surrounded by armed men and captured Sunday after landing near Sirte in a Lynx helicopter that was on board the navy ship HMS Tromp, which is anchored off the Libyan coast to help evacuations from the conflict torn country, spokesman Otte Beeksma told The Associated Press.

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) March 19, 2011 -- The U.S. military has launched its first missiles in Libya against Moammar Gadhafi's forces, a senior Defense Department official said Saturday.

Earlier, French fighter jets deployed over Libya fired at a military vehicle on Saturday, the country's first strike against Moammar Gadhafi's military forces who earlier attacked the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

The French Defense Ministry, which confirmed the strike, said its attack aircraft being used to take out tanks and artillery have deemed Benghazi and the surrounding area an "exclusion zone."

The French are using surveillance aircraft and two frigates in the operation to protect civilians. The aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle will soon depart Toulon, France.

When it came to the crunch, Chancellor Angela Merkel and her foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, decided that Germany should side with China and Russia. These three members of the UN security council abstained from Thursday's vote on a resolution to impose a no-fly zone over Libya, along with Brazil and India. It is a curious political development, to say the least.

The three make for strange bedfellows. There is Germany, a democracy which puts great store in the rule of law and human rights, siding with a communist, one-party dictatorship and a country with a dubious track record on political freedoms. On the other side are Germany's traditional allies – the US, France and Britain – not to mention parts of the Arab and African world. Lebanon had been one of the countries presenting the resolution, which was backed by the Arab League. Qatar and the UAE have already said they would take part in a military operation, according to UN diplomats.

And despite the Libyan regime's move on Friday afternoon to declare a ceasefire – at least for now – and inviting international observers into the country, Berlin's move could have lasting repercussions. Although Berlin has not blocked military action by abstaining, the German government has marginalised itself. It is effectively telling its allies: You will have to deal with this one alone – we're not going to help you.

Four New York Times journalists missing in Libya have been located and will be freed by military forces, the newspaper reported Friday, apparently ending a drama that underscored the perils of reporting amid the tumult in the Middle East.

I think this would have been taken care of by now,if we had acted initially. Now this madman has taken back some of the places that were originally out of his control. I hate the thought that we are fighting on another front!! And how ironic that the President is in Brazil,a country that abstained from intervening.
 
We have not been on good terms with Libya since the early to mid eighties.

Khadafi is not a puppet dictator of ours. He siezed power a long time ago.

He continued to kill his people in Libya because he has no reason to be afraid of us or anything Obama says.

Most of the Middleeast considers him weak and considering I lived in the middleeast for quite sometime it doesn't shock me that they do. It is a cultural issue.

However I can understand partly due to his lack of reaction and action.

No he isn't. Not in anyway - shape- or form. No way, no how.

I have been following what is going on there since the OP started the thread and I'm quite unsure exactly what is going on. I'm also unsure why it is we are chosing to bomb Libya at this time. He's been murdering his own people for quite some time and I haven't figured out exactly why we are firing on them.

Not saying we shouldn't. Not saying we should. Just saying I'm not sure as to the why we are at this moment.

How bizarre that this administration should chose to take this action at this point in time.

(FWIW, if the previous administration had chosen this course of action I would also ponder why they were doing it).
