Montana Dept. of Justice

In Montana, the Department of Justice truly is a public safety agency. We provide a wide range of specialized assistance to local, state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies throughout the state. Our broad law enforcement responsibilities include enforcement, forensics, prosecution and training.
•Each year, our criminal investigators assist in investigating homicide, sex assault, drug and white-collar crime cases. They collect evidence, interview witnesses and analyze crime patterns.
•Forensic scientists at the crime lab help identify suspects, process crime scenes, analyze evidence, conduct autopsies and, if necessary, testify in court.
•Prosecutors assist county attorneys in filing charges, preparing cases for trial and prosecuting offenders. In the event a convicted person files any appeals, the department's attorneys represent the state.
•The Crime Victim Compensation Program helps victims and their families with medical and mental health expenses and funeral costs.
•The Law Enforcement Academy in the Helena Valley trains law enforcement officers throughout the state.
•And our Highway Patrol troopers work to keep our highways safe and free of drug traffic.
