Prayers for them all! The last time this happened there were no survivors and the media reports said the pirates were becoming more dangerous and not allowing the captives to escape/live.

I hope they show some mercy here

How horrible!!! Something has to be done about this, it is getting completely out of hand. I can't imagine the fear that family and crew are currently living in.

The military needs to start having trials on their ships and making these *** walk the plank.

This seems to have happened last Thursday, according to other cruisers who were notified earlier. I bet they're in Somalia by now.

I consider these acts of war and should be treated as such with coordination of other governments.

Seems to me the Indian Ocean should be declared a war zone. Every country in the world should advise their citizens of the danger of travelling the Indian ocean. All shipping should be stopped going into Somalia including food, oil, gas, cargo, corn, wheat etc. Until Somalia releases ALL hostages and can Guarantee safe passage for the Indian Ocean.

I know they have no active government but the screws should be turned tight until they conform. Military action should be considered. Any pirate ship should be considered a war combatant and be sunk.

Any ship needing passage should be escorted by the Navies of the world and if a country does not have a Navy escorts should be provided and the government charged for the service. Anyone not doing so sails at their own risk.

I hope our intelligence sources are working to identify targets and I'm not opposed to an invasion force. This of course should all be done by security agreements with other countries.

This is just a basic outline.

It is time for some drastic action against the country of Somalia. I have a few good ideas that I better not post.

There have been two proposals by the cruising community:

    1) barricade the coastline: it's cheaper/easier than patrolling the Indian Ocean. But it would be an act of war under int'l law. However... that's what it already is, IMO.

    2) require all ships, yachts, fishing boats in the Indian Ocean to have AIS. AIS is an Automatic Identification System - so that when you see a boat on your radar, you see it's identity and some more info, I think (size, etc). Right now it's only required on boats that are 300 tons are larger. Many other boats have them, even sailboats, but it's not required. If it were required and there were military checkpoints, then any boat without an AIS and who did not give their identity would be apprehended.

It's really a problem that has to be solved on land long-term, but for short-term solutions there's got to be something better. I do think they will kill hostages from now on if rescues are attempted: life in a US prison is better than life in Somalia these days, I'm sure.

A bit more about the children...

The ministry said Monday that a Danish couple, their three children aged 12-16 and two adult crew members were on board the boat. All are Danish nationals.

They're stooping lower and lower... I think there were originally "pirates" (e.g., take care of the crew b/c they're worth $$$) and now there are breakaway "pirate gangs" (e.g., do whatever you want).

Most hostages captured in the pirate-infested waters off East Africa are professional sailors, not families. Pirates are not known to have captured children before.

They sent their distress signal two days after the 4 Americans were killed. They were probably already across the Indian Ocean at that point. Right now, there are several sailboats in the same situation - already in the Indian Ocean, running low on fuel, food, etc, while trying to find a safe place to go in light of all of this.

Also, you don't always get the most up-to-date info "out there", unless someone is e-mailing you via your SSB radio, which is probably turned off if transiting pirate-infested waters. Or unless you have a sat phone, which is too expensive for many families cruising on a shoestring budget, as we did.
