This is near and dear to my heart - the care of our elderly.

I put this here instead of celebrity news b/c I don't feel this is about Mickey Rooney but rather that he is using his status to help a cause. It seems that his type of abuse may have been different than what many others go through, but I hope the attention he is bringing to the issue helps put more protections in place.

The 90-year-old film and television star told lawmakers that elder abuse comes in various forms, including physical and emotional. In his case, he described the abuse as financial.

..........

Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., who chairs the Special Senate Committee on Aging, said the elderly are particularly vulnerable because they are "often fragile" and their abusers usually stand little chance of getting caught.

Morning belimom,

We do have another thread on this in the Celebrity section.
I'm glad Mickey has gone before Congress about this issue. I read the
first article and it is so sad how the stepson abused him. I mean he
didn't give him food or medications either aside from taking his $.
The elderly and the sick are vulnerable to mistreatment so it's good
he is making a stand.

Interesting - I didn't look there but when I typed in the title, it didn't pull it up (you know how it pulls up similar threads?). Anyway, my apologies!

(I think by putting it in Celebrity News, it becomes about Mickey Rooney and not about the elderly - and his role in bringing attention to the matter, kwim?)
