OR - Juan Martinez-Rodriguez, 20 yrs for impregnating 10 year old
My heart goes out to the victim and her family. Oh, how it does. When we went to court for disposition and the rapist was led away in handcuffs, my adult son spoke harshly to him. This followed weeks, in facts months, of perfect behavior from both families. The judge even complemented both families on their behavior. My son, though, had just been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was on IV steroids. He felt unbelievable anger against the rapist and in retrospect should not have been in the courtroom. He was wrestled to the floor--all 6'1" 110 lbs. of him by a burly bailiff. I just remember crying as my husband literally squeezed my hand so hard I thought it would break.
Families are expected to comport themselves in a reasonable manner at all times. No outbursts or shows of emotion are allowed. I was not permitted to make eye contact with any of our children as they testified. At the PCR trial, nine years later, I was advised to stop slurring my words as the court reporter could not understand me. I couldn't speak more clearly as I was losing my ability to speak. I was also strictly told by the defense attorney to stop my tremor as it could be construed as a nod. Children are firmly told that they must speak up and use the correct words for body parts and that crying will not be tolerated. I'm not sure that most people realize just what level of comportment we demand of victims and how difficult it is to control oneself when you are hurting so badly. I can't condone any violence or sharp words, ever, but I do understand this father's grief.
Anger in a Multnomah County court when family sees defendant
"While waiting for proceedings to start Thursday in a case that the prosecutor later said was the most horrific she's seen in 14 years, the two families – the victim's and the defendant's -- quietly shared a single courtroom bench. No one spoke, although they when they thought no one was looking, they glanced at each other. Then the door opened. And when the defendant stepped inside the room, the victim's father jumped from his seat, shouted and vowed to kill the man who had impregnated his daughter.
She was 10...."
"....Juan Martinez-Rodriguez, 30, remained hunched over. He never acknowledged the commotion. He bowed his head and focused on a piece of paper that spelled out the plea agreement that would send him to prison for 20 years for attempted rape and for sex abuse.
Late last year he'd been arrested when his fiance's daughter showed up in a Portland hospital complaining of stomach cramps. Doctors discovered the girl was 31 weeks pregnant...."

Ten years old. How exactly does "attempted rape" result in a pregnancy? Never mind. Appalling.

OMG how could someone date this man... it's disgusting!!
"As they turned Martinez-Rodriguez around, the spotted his new girlfriend and 3-year-old daughter sitting at the far end of the bench. "

This is the problem with plea deals, IMO. By the end of the dealing, the crime they plead to does not even resemble the crime they committed.
Attempted rape, so I guess those stomach pains were the result of an attempted pregnancy? WTH?????
Dear God, her future. To say nothing of the past pain, but her future. What if she becomes pregnant in the future? Is that even physically possible for her now? What if at some point later in life, she is able to move past this, marry, and settle into her own family? Then what? Will she want more children? Will it be a happy time for her, or will it be pure hell, just one long nine month flashback? Will she ever be able to bond if she does have kids?
And the fact that he did this to his fiance's daughter, and then had a girlfriend with a three year old? How? How did a ten year old hide her pregnancy? Not buying that, period. How could another woman be so STUPID as to put her child at risk?
AGH! This world just pisses me off sometimes.JMO. Unless there's a link, I can't prove it.

The only thing I can think of is that there might have been no vaginal penetration and thus the plea was accepted. We all know that pregnancy can result from ejaculation close the the female genitals.
My only guess (and it's just a wild guess) is that maybe this little girl is a bit plump and being so young, a pregnancy wouldn't be expected. If I'm not mistaken, girls can get pregnant (rarely so) just before the onset of menses.
The article makes it seem as if she has stayed with her mother and that tells me that most likely the mother was as shocked as everyone else. FWIW, menstruation is occurring at alarmingly earlier ages and can be linked to chemicals in our food and to substances which the mother is exposed to during pregnancy. One of our daughters started at 8 and another at 9. Both were cocaine exposed in utero. Hopefully, this little girl/now mother is getting a high level of support. That kills me to write that sentence. She had her whole childhood stolen away.
It's really heartbreaking. As to why another woman would date this monster, Peeples, I have no earthly clue. Surely, she had to know that there were charges. I'm shaking my head too.
