Yes, just heard this on the news...horrible but I feel these tour buses speed way too much. I guessing he had too much speed to make that turn...I also feel buses should have seatbelts and if they did, many might have not died...JMHO

My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of those killed...

    Godspeed to those injured...JMHO

I don't know about speed. It wasn't mentioned in the article. Instead, the accident was most likely caused by the tractor trailer that hit them from behind and then left the scene of the accident.

    From the OP's link:

The bus, operated by the charter company World Wide Tours, was headed to Manhattan's Chinatown neighborhood carrying a full load of passengers returning from the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Conn.

As it entered the city at around 5:30 a.m., it was struck from behind by a tractor trailer, Browne said. The bus began swerving, toppled and crashed into the support post for a highway sign indicating the exit for the Hutchinson Parkway.

My grandparents used to love taking these trips to Mohegan Sun. Prayers for all involved, and the loved ones who are left to grieve. I hope they find the driver of the tractor trailer.

Was there a tractor trailer? If it did exist did it strike the bus? Or was the bus driver trying to avoid hitting it? So far the story is unclear.

Police probe claim NYC bus was driven off road
Crash in which 14 people died is being treated as if it was a crime by detectives
    By JIM FITZGERALD, TOM HAYS
    The Associated Press
    updated 1 minute ago 2011-03-13T16:22:05

NEW YORK Police were investigating a bus driver's claim that he was driven off a major highway before his bus slid into a sign pole that sheared it end to end, killing 14 people and leaving others maimed in a horrific scene of blood, jumbled bodies and shattered glass.

The driver, Ophadell Williams, told police that a tractor-trailer clipped his World Wide Tours bus just as it crossed the city line on a trip from the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut.

But state police said witnesses told them Williams was speeding before Saturday morning's crash on Interstate 95.

The above link quotes a man who ended up "hanging from his seatbelt," so apparently there were at least some seatbelts on the bus.

"Passengers in Sunday's crash are contradicting the driver's story that he was side-swiped by a tractor-trailer. A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that passengers say the driver swerved at times for no reason while driving."

Manslaughter trial opens for Ophadell Williams, tour bus driver who crashed and killed 15 during trip to casino

Prosecutors say Williams was seriously sleep-deprived but drove anyway, killing 15 people, mostly Chinese men and women who were regulars at the Mohegan Sun casino. Williams claims a tractor-trailer cut him off.

Jurors have reached a verdict in the trial of a casino bus driver who crashed in the Bronx, killing 15 passengers.

The verdict in the trial of Ophadell Williams was reached around 3:40 p.m. today, but Judge Troy Webber had the sheet sealed because Juror No.9 needed to leave in order to attend a medical appointment.

The verdict will be unsealed and read on Friday.
