David Lore Jr. and Angela Lore ran a pet store. They also had four kids between 7 and 16. Earlier this month, DSS gets a report that the living conditions in their home are unfit for anyone, no matter how many legs they have. Report said the house was dirty, the pets weren't being fed and if they died, they were just sort of left where they fell (the pets, not the kids.) So, DSS goes out to check. They find out that the kids have NEVER been enrolled in public school, now I don't know of that means that they were homeschooled, but I doubt it, since they also found that the parents preferred being at the pet store to being at home. They saw no trouble with leaving the kids to fend for themselves in the filth, though. The children had recieved "very little" medical care, so it seems that the animals and the kids were in the same boat there.
They are each on a $250,000 bond. facing multiple counts. The kids and three dogs were removed from the home.

Seems that this has been an ongoing investigation for the course of months. Seems that even though they left the kids at home for long stretches surrounding by decaying animal corpses, neighbors and friends are popping up to defend their homeschooling and parenting ability.
The kids are placed together with relatives and enrolled in school. I'd bet they've been to doctors too.

This link has photos of the outside of their house. I doubt the inside was much better:

ETA: And of course, I have to ask, if they had been being investigated since December, how the heck did the house still look like that and no one not say that it was unacceptable?

Hmmmmmmmm back in September their pet store was one of only two buildings not damaged in a fore.

They moved anyhow.

Police Officer describes inside of house. He said it was bad, and he's been in every crack house in the county.

Warning not for the weak of heart including cockroaches that didn't scurry, but just were hanging out like no problem.

These poor children.

OMG the outside of that house is just nasty!

Sounds like an episode I recently watched of Hoarders. I also read a story not too long ago where the mother died, and the daughter just left her there -- for YEARS!

My heart goes out to the children.

I have been in houses like that, where the cockroaches just stare you down. They literally don't even flinch, because they have learned that you aren't going to splat them. (Or clean up their food sources. Ick.

if the smell was so bad it was detectable from the road, I think we know why they weren't in school. Since they oldest is 16 and they have never been enrolled in school, makes me wonder how long it has been that bad...

Poor kids. Poor pets.

The Lores had operated Pet Place at the Webb Road Flea Market, but after a massive fire destroyed the flea market in September, they moved to a shop at 848 S. Main St. in Salisbury.

---------------------

Maybe the fleas hitched a ride to their trailer too.

(Sorry, but this is so deplorable I had to say something.)

Reminds me of at least one of the Hoarders programs too.

Wow, how disgusting! You mean to tell me people knew children lived in that home and did nothing? Just for seeing the yard, you could use your imagination about what the home looked like from the inside! gross!! I don't even think they can clean that just take it all to the dump including the mobile home! JMO

Not just people. People from the state. People that are charged with keeping children safe and out of bad situations. Those are the people that dropped the ball...again.

November 2011:

A Rowan County couple who authorities said housed their children in squalid conditions and didn’t feed their pets will not serve jail time on child abuse charges.

David Lore Jr., 38, and Angela Lore, 36, of 3435 Rockwell Road, were each charged in March with four counts of child abuse, four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three counts of animal cruelty.

The couple each received a total of three years probation after spending much of Monday in Rowan County District Court with their attorneys. -
