CO~LEO/DARE officer, Michael Mangino, coerced girls to take nude photos for him

This is so sad. One of my favorite people in the world is my children's D.A.R.E. officer. Even years later, she's still a role model for them. This man is shameless and a disgrace.

Cop arrested over nude photos of teen runaway

"AURORA, Colorado — A school policeman accused of coercing a runaway girl to take nude photos of herself was arrested on Monday, becoming the city's second officer to face sex charges in four months. Michael Mangino, 50, is facing two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor along with charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and official misconduct..."

    and

Mangino served as a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer in several schools in Aurora, Denver's largest suburb. Another Aurora DARE officer, Morgan Sellman, was arrested on child pornography charges last December. He resigned from the force and his case is pending. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Mangino's alleged victim was a 15-year-old runaway from California..."

    and

"....Officer Mangino told her that he has all of the girls he arrests take photos of themselves for him..."

What an absolute creep!! Doesn't an officer have to get clearance and do a mileage check-in when they transport someone? What's up with that? Why was this child in his car with so little oversight? I have to wonder if this girl is challenged in some way or if he was extremely threatening to her, as I wouldn't think many teens would fall for this, especially in the safety of a hospital. I wonder just how many times he's pulled this stunt. Does he have to give back his plaque for Humanitarian of the Year?

".....According to the arrest affidavit, the girl admitted she had smoked pot four hours earlier, and so she needed to be medically cleared before she could be taken to the Arapahoe County Juvenile Assessment Center.

According to statements from two investigators, while Mangino was driving the girl to Children's Hospital in Aurora for a urine analysis, he told her that he had begun taking photographs of all of the people he arrested and that he needed pictures of her naked body.

The girl told police that while they were waiting at the hospital, he urged her to take his password-protected Droid phone into the restroom, where she disrobed and photographed her own face and body. She then returned the phone to him, she said.
Investigators found sexually explicit photos of the girl on Mangino's personal phone..."

"...There have been no allegations from the schools, which include Clyde Miller, Vaughn, Lyn Knoll and Arkansas elementaries in Aurora Public Schools, Eastridge Elementary in Cherry Creek, and St. Pius X Catholic School in Aurora, where Mangino worked for four years...."

I'm trying to process this. The only restriction is that Mangino not contact the victim? He can leave the state and be around other children? We'll see how this works out.

Aurora cop accused of sexual misconduct OK to leave state for work, judge rules

"Aurora police officer Michael Mangino, charged with sexual exploitation of a child, made his first court appearance today in Adams County District Court. Mangino, 50, a former D.A.R.E. officer, is accused of having a runaway girl use his phone to photograph herself naked. Judge Jeffrey Romeo set Mangino's preliminary hearing for June 14, when the judge will decide whether there is enough evidence against Mangino to go to trial.

    and

"...Defense attorney Doug Jewell asked Romeo to allow Mangino to travel out of state for work, which the judge OK'd. Prosecutors today tried to ban Mangino from having any contact with children, but the judge said he did not have enough knowledge of the case to warrant that. He did, however, give a protection order for the alleged victim...."

Is she the only girl who they found pictures of?

What if she took his phone and took the photos herself? Is that his defense?

I know that sounds weird, but my attorney brother had a young client SEXTING him. For real, and he had his friend, a detective, coming over and waiting for the next texts to show them it was NOT HIM ASKING HER TO DO IT. LOL Poor guy, he was so scared about it. But the detective went to her home and asked her to please STOP doing that, but she kept on. My brother had to change his number a few times.

An update and some new details. This is going to be a tough call. Why would an officer put himself in this position in the first place? Give the girl the phone and give her the password just as she goes in the restroom?

I honestly thought this guy was going to wiggle out of this charge but I guess not:

Cop Accused Of Sexually Exploiting Teen Resigns
    September 12, 2011

"...Officer Michael Mangino, 50, who is accused of sexually exploiting a teenager, turned in his resignation to the chief, who accepted it. The resignation was effective on Monday at 9 a.m. "I am relieved that Mr. Mangino is no longer a police officer in this agency. The APD will continue to assist the District Attorney in a vigorous prosecution of the charges against him," said Chief Dan Oates...."

    and

"...A 29-year veteran of the Aurora Police Department, Mangino is accused of coercing a 15-year-old female runaway to take sexually explicit photos of herself with his cellphone. When police officers confiscated that cell phone from Mangino, detectives found it also contained photos and videos of Mangino engaging in sex with women, possibly while on duty..."

    and

"....Mangino, who was most recently a community resource officer in District 1, was also a DARE instructor in several elementary schools. In one of the videos found on Mangino's phone, the camera focuses on the buttocks of a young girl in a DARE class as she was bending over a table in a classroom..."

    and

"....Police are concerned that there are other victims and are asking for the students and parents at six elementary schools to come forward if they have more information about Mangino's conduct. The six schools where Mangino was a DARE officer are:

    Arkansas
    Clyde Miller
    Vaughn
    Lyn Knoll
    Eastridge
    St. Pius X

    and

"...This is the second Aurora officer involved in police department's DARE program to have been arrested in four months. In December, another Aurora police officer was arrested in Colorado Springs, accused of taking child porn and sex toys to work. Sgt. Morgan Sellman, 39 [we have a thread], was arrested on suspicion of sexual exploitation of children for possession of child pornography...."

The teen is 15, for pity's sake and she says this:

"...When she returned to the home for runaways, she told a counselor that she took photos of herself for a police officer. When asked if she thought this was abnormal, she said no, that she's done that at least twice before, although she was not certain during the other two times if the officers involved were really officers or police impersonators.
She said she did what Mangino told her to do because he was "nice to her, not handcuffing her and giving her chips to eat...."

How tremendously sad is that? And we doubt the new numbers on sexual assault. One in three girls and one in 6 boys. Shameful.

I am so glad that we are at least hearing about more cases so that we have a better idea of how to protect our children. Stories like these make me want to lock the kids in the house. So hard to teach them who to trust when you always have to add the caveat that even the good guys might really be bad guys.
Just my opinions (and I have been wrong before)!
