Austin and Edward, along with a younger brother, were among nine children adopted by Edward and Linda Bryant. The Bryants lived in the Monument area near Colorado Springs, Colorado between 1999 and 2005. They have also lived in Texas. Edward may have disappeared in 2001, when he was 9, and Austin may have disappeared as early as 2003, when he was 7. However, the exact timeline is unknown. Law enforcement was not notified of their disappearance until January 2011.

Edward and Linda Bryant were arrested on charges of receiving nearly $175,000 in government payments to support the boys, even though they weren't living with the couple for most of the decade. The boys remain missing.
