NY - Unidentified Victims of Long Island Craig's List Killer

I held out on posting this because I thought she would be quickly ID'd as Shannon Gilbert. However, police say that the fifth victim is not Shannon.

Since the victim remains unidentified, it seems that there should be a thread here (in addition to the thead in the Crimes in the News forum).

A police spokeswoman said Thursday that authorities determined the remains were not those of Shannan Gilbert of Jersey City, N.J.

Here are additional details regarding the discovery:
The remains of a fifth body were located west of Cedar Beach, Long Island, approximately one mile from where the other corpses were discovered in December, according to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer.

The remains turned out to be Shannan Gilbert after all.

ETA: However, this is the only article I can find that says that it is Shannan. All others that I can find indicate that it is not Shannan.

The comments on the bottom say that the article is incorrect and the victim is NOT Shannon Gilbert. I dont know how to post links but I checked Newsday(local paper) just now and it still also says its not her. Strange. Someones info is wrong.

Such a glaring mistake, they should be ashamed and eager to correct it.

Three more bodies have been found in the Gilgo Beach area, bringing the total of bodies found to eight.

... and BTW, according to this article, the fifth victim was male:

Last week, a fifth still unidentified boy was discovered in rugged underbrush. Four women were found nearby in December. They had worked as prostitutes and escorts advertising on Craigslist.

This story does not say whether the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th are male or female.

Eight sets of human remains have been found in neighbouring Suffolk County since December, CNN reported. Police have said the remains may have been in the area for more than two years. Four bodies have been identified as women who advertised prostitution services on websites.

On the other Blog spots for this topic and I admit I didn't read all the pages, people were asking how could the UnSub/SK know the victims family numbers and call.As well as using a pc and not be traced?

I've some thoughts.According to the Police Profile the SK is above average intelligence. So as to locating victims family.Simple take the victim's cell phone and look at the call memory.Sure no last names maybe but logic would tell you the most frequent in out calls would be family. The SK simply buys a burn phone using cash and starts calling numbers. When a person answers they simply say"Hi I am a friend of so and so I've not seen her in a week is she ok?"Sooner or later a family member will answer and start talking.Once done with his tormenting call he tosses the burn cell phone in the trash. As for the pc use.A person good with computers would know how to bounce off so many servers to be untraceable or know that wireless is everywhere.Simply drive around until you find one not pass word protected or go to any number of internet cafe's or coffee shops.

Lastly I am going to add to the profile. If the SK did in fact call and torment then that tells me he also is a sadist as well as a sociopath. He gets off striking fear into people and his victims.I would say each victim was tortured before their death. Not only does he need to strike fear but he needs to be and display that he is in total control as well as superior to everyone around him.As has been suggested it also wouldn't surprise me if the SK is super religious to a fanatical degree. If this is the case add to just above and his deep need to punish sinfulness and the families that raised them.

I would say it's safe to say the massive media attention and the fact it's National News will draw him into doing more.He loves the attention as I said makes him feel superior strikes fear and that he is in total control. If religious to a fanatical dregee he sees him self doing God's work.

According to authorities, the two most recently found victims have been there too long to have been likely victims of the Craigslist killer. Police are speculating that they might be victims of serial killer Joel Rifkin.

Also, one of the victims is believed to be a child.

Multiple killers in N.Y. beach murders?

Possibly more than one killer responsible for Long Island bodies: DA

'Another body discovered in recent months appears to be that of an Asian man who was in his late teens or early 20s and who died violently, officials said.

Another is a baby girl, between 18 and 24 months old, who was found wrapped in a blanket. "

"The killer or killers of Jane Doe 6 and Ms Taylor went to extra lengths in an attempt to prevent the victims from being identified," Mr Spota said, referring to how both women had been dismembered and scattered in different spots. "That is clearly not so with any of the other remains that we have found."

"Ms Taylor was thus dismembered, police said, while noting also that her killer had gone to additional lengths to conceal her identity, for example by scraping a tattoo from her lower back."

    Detailed article with video clip...

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/...20061368.shtml
"Early Show" co-anchor Chris Wragge remarked, "This is the thing that's troubling -- there are no clues left behind in any of the cases. If these are separate serial killers, they're very thorough in covering their own tracks."

Jordan said, "That's what's so disturbing about Jessica Taylor. Whoever killed her took the trouble to dismember her, leave her torso in Manorville and then dump her head and her hands 40 miles away. Now there have been two other case, one from '97, one from 2007, where torsos have also been found in the water with legs and other body parts found later. So the dismemberment cases - two of whom are still unidentified - may all come together and link with Jessica Taylor."

Police investigators, Jordan said, have their work cut out for them with forensics in these cases.

She added, "The one thing they should never discount is talking to the victims' families and using the public to try to get clues. You'd be amazed how many of the cases are actually solved because somebody calls in with a clue that links everybody together."

Another "badly decomposed" unidentified body was found on a beach on the east end of Long Island.

By my count, that's now 11 (though not all were killed by the same perp)

    From the above link.

Amagansett beach is about 100 miles east of an area along a highway near Jones Beach where 10 sets of human remains have been found since December.

I'm unsure if this victim found on Amagansett beach is in any way related to the 10 sets of remains already found. 100 miles away is a large distance. I supposed it could be the perp had more than one dumping site but at this point I think the cases are unrelated until LE finds a connection.

The victim is a short-statured male age 20-30, and is probably unrelated to the Craigs List murders of at least five prostitutes found in the Gilgo Beach area.

Police have released sketches of two of the three still unidentified victims found recently on Long Island Beaches.

Unidentified victim matched by DNA to body parts found in 2000 about 45 miles away. The victim is also linked by DNA to the remains of an unidentified toddler found nearby.

The woman's torso was found in Manorville in November 2000. DNA analysis confirmed that the same woman’s head, hands and right foot were discovered along Ocean Parkway on April 4, Dormer said. She was described as a white woman between the ages of 18 and 35 believed to have last been seen in the late summer or early fall of 2000.

Asian man believed to be between the ages of 17 and 23, of who was found dressed in women’s clothing and also suspected of being a prostitute.

forensic analysis showed the man was not Yim Yeng Tsui, a Stony Brook University student declared missing in August 1998.

Here's a map of where each set of remains were found:

Thanks for posting the updates and sketches. This article states that "Jane Doe #6," the UID female found in Manorville in 2000 who is in the sketch you posted, was found within yards of the toddler girl and was suspected to be her mother or another relative, but there was no DNA connection and the girl's relative (possible mother) was found farther away:

This guy's facial features align perfectly to the facial reconstruction:

    Mo Zhang
    http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/z/zhang_mo.html

I have sized the above images so that they are comparable. If you click your mouse on Mo's photo and drag it to the right over the reconstruction, Mo's photo becomes transparent, and you can test the similarity of their facial shapes and spacing of their facial features.

ETA: I just realized that this trick only works if you are using the Mozilla Firefox browser.

I'm confused. Don't we already have one for this person in the Long Island Serial Killer forum titled "Possible Victim-Asian Man" or is this a second asia male that was found?

I can't move either photo anywhere. I see a strong resemblence with the side by sides and see how the above could work if I were able to do as you suggested above.

I would call this one in Carl. there is so little information on Mo this might be a match.
