April 5 named as Somer Thompson Day in Clay County
7-year-old girl who was killed in 2009 will be honored with upcoming events

The Clay County Commission has proclaimed April 5 as Somer Thompson Day in memory of the 7-year-old Orange Park girl who was abducted and killed in 2009 on her way home from school.

Her birthday is April 5.

Somer Thompson Day will be recognized on that day this year and "each year hereafter," according to the proclamation. April 5 this year falls on a Tuesday.

At the commission's March 22 meeting, Somer's mother, Diena Thompson, accepted the proclamation, as well as a symbolic key to the county from Commission Chairman Travis Cummings.

"We do need to stand together as a community, we need to stand up against the predators," she said.

Thompson said she plans to bring a program to the Jacksonville area called RadKIDS, which teaches children from age 3 to 13 strategies for getting away from would-be abductors and handling bullying and Internet crimes.

"It teaches kids about everything. It is a really, really good tool to use," she said.

Happy Birthday Somer, you should be blowing out the candles on your cake. :(

School Celebrates Somer Thompson Day
Moment Of Silence Honors Slain Girl On 9th Birthday

ORANGE PARK, Fla. — A moment of silence was held Tuesday morning in a first-grade classroom at Grove Park Elementary School in honor of Somer Thompson Day in Clay County.

County commissioners proclaimed Tuesday to be named after the girl who was kidnapped while walking home from the Orange Park school and killed in October 2009. Tuesday would have been Somer's ninth birthday.

Commissioners asked everyone in the county to wear purple, Somer's favorite color, or do something to remember the girl whose death touched the entire community.
