A serial killer is defined as one who has killed three or more; Sweeney, just found guilty of two murders, is a safe bet to be classified as one. It's a case that bears watching as the body count could soar.

How many more victims? Police fear 'Scalp Hunter' may have murdered another three women and two men
Multiple murderer John Sweeney may have killed three more women and two men, said police on the day he was convicted of a double murder.

Sweeney, 54, was today found guilty at the Old Bailey of killing 33-year-old former model Melissa Halstead in 1990 and dumping her dismembered body in a canal in Rotterdam, Holland.

He also convicted of murdering mother-of-three Paula Fields, 31, ten years later and dumping six bags containing ten pieces of her body in the Regent's Canal in Camden, north London.

Police now want to know what became of two South American former girlfriends Sweeney used to see who have not been sighted since the 90s. Not much is known about them, except that one was a Colombian called Maria, the other a Brazilian woman known as Leani.

On top of this there may be a third missing woman, and police are also investigating Sweeney's claims to Miss Balmer that he killed two German men he caught with Miss Halstead.

Sweeney's case is pocked by madness:

John Sweeney guilty of canal murders

A search of Sweeney's flat revealed more than 300 pieces of violent artwork and poems.

Brian Altman QC, prosecuting, told the jury: "Police discovered amongst his possessions often lurid and demonic sketches and paintings, as well as pages of verse which reveal an obsessive and virulent hatred of women, and a preoccupation with dismemberment. By butchering and disposing of bodies in this way, the killer had intended that neither they should be identified, nor he should be."

Another sketch, The Scalphunter, showed women tied up and another showed Sweeney holding up blades dripping with blood.

[Prosecutor Brian] Altman said they were in many ways "autobiographical and confessional".

One of the poems read: "On the run from the law, with my back to the wall. Watching the windows and the door. I'm not afraid to do or die. Maybe when this life is over I will get some sleep."

In another passage he wrote: "I'm just a manimal, twisted and confused, very dysfunctional."

What a monster, reads like a story from a gorey horror movie. What is he like, how did he pull all those lovely women, with a face as ugly as sin. Sorry the day they ever crossed his path. No doubt he's an accomplished serial killer, the worst Britain has seen for a long time.

Yes, as the murders for which he was convicted were separated by a period of ten years, one can well imagine his grim total in that interval as being even higher than suspected.

Exactly, there is no doubt that this man would have killed frequently. It seems he had a compulsion, an insatiable need for killing and dismemberment.
I have to wonder what hold, did he have on all these women such as Mellissa. He attacks this beautiful American lady with a claw hammer and then persuades her go back and with him in Amsterdam. She knew that her life was in danger as he had already threatened to kill her and eventually did.

But to give him his dues, he did pen an elegant obituary dedicated to his love

"Poor old Melissa. Chopped her up in bits. Food to feed the fish. Am*dam was the pits."

No doubt Sweeney will be another name added to the list of notorious serial killers, such as Dennis Neilson and Fred West

Richly deserved.

John Sweeney, 54, was given a whole-life tariff at the Old Bailey for the murders of former girlfriends Paula Fields and Melissa Halstead.
---
The judge said the killings had been planned.
---
He said: "These were terrible, wicked crimes.

"The heads of the victims having been removed, it is impossible to be certain how they were killed.

"The mutilation of the bodies is a serious aggravating feature of the murders."
