    TX - Shirley Geanes, 40, Rowlett, 22 Sept 2004

Richardson police turn missing woman's case over to DPD

Richardson police are turning over the case of a 40-year-old woman who disappeared last week after cleaning a home in Rowlett to the Dallas Police Department's missing persons unit.

Richardson police Sgt. Kevin Perlich said police believe possible foul play in Shirley Marie Geanes' disappearance may have taken place in Dallas.

Geanes went missing Wednesday en route to a Coppell home. "She never showed up to the other home," said Capt. George Robertson of the Richardson Police Department.

Geanes' husband reported her missing Thursday after searching for her Wednesday afternoon and evening, Robertson said.

A Dallas County constable located Geanes' vehicle Thursday near Interstate 30 and Samuell Boulevard in Dallas.

"Due to the condition that the vehicle was found in, we feel (Geanes) could be in danger," Robertson said, adding that he would not comment on the vehicle's condition.

Several of Geanes' neighbors on North Cottonwood Drive said they didn't know her well.

Marlene Phipps, 67, said Geanes' husband, Sam, used to help her husband with his wheelchair. "They seemed nice and friendly. I just feel bad. They need to find her one way or another," Phipps said.

Police described Shirley Geanes as 5 feet, 4 inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information should call the Richardson Police Department at (972) 744-4800.

Jenn, they said on the news last night that a bullet hole was found in the car and there was no back window. I drive home this way and the car was right next to White Rock Creek. I hope she's not in there.

Search for missing Richardson woman continues

Vigil set for tonight at N. Dallas church

03:27 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 28, 2004

    By APRIL KINSER / DallasNews.com

While friends and family members continued to hold out hope for the safe return of a missing Richardson woman, a dog searched unsuccessfully for her Tuesday in two areas of Dallas.

An FBI cadaver dog was brought in to search the Cambridge Square Apartments in East Dallas and an area near Interstate 30 and Samuell Boulevard where a Dallas County constable found her abandoned 1998 Ford Escort.

Sources told WFAA-TV that Shirley Marie Geanes, 40, might have known someone who lives at the apartment complex where dogs searched. Sgt. Gil Cerda said the apartment complex is near where the car was found.

Shirley Geanes Geanes, 40, disappeared Wednesday somewhere between Rowlett and Coppell, where she cleaned homes for the business she shares with her husband, Sam.

Sam Geanes, 41, called Richardson police late Wednesday when his wife didn’t come home after cleaning a Rowlett house. A day later, her car was found with the back windshield broken in with the keys still in the ignition. Her purse with identification, tire rims and a vacuum cleaner were missing.

A police source said there was a bullet hole in the vehicle.

Roderick Caraway, Shirley’s 25-year-old son, said he believes someone tried to make the crime scene look like a robbery.

“I think she was driven there by someone or someone asked her to meet them there,” he said. “I think she’s hurt or too weak, that she’s laying there and can’t help herself.”

Cerda said Dallas and Richardson police investigators were continuing to work on the case and were hoping someone could call with a sighting.

A close friend of Shirley Geanes’ said Monday she last spoke to her about two weeks ago, but they usually chatted at least two to three times a week.

“Everything was fine when we spoke,” Regina Mobley said.

Mobley said the Geaneses argued about “normal things” such as “life in general” and their financial situation because the cleaning business was understaffed and the two sometimes worked long hours.

But she described their relationship as loving.

“In the past they have had some problems, but they have always worked them through,” she said. “Family is the most important thing for Shirley. She loves her son. He is the most important thing in her life.”

Sam Geanes had said Monday the couple were both on their third marriage and Shirley had a 16-year-old son from a previous relationship who lived with them. Caraway said it was his mother’s first marriage; state records appear to confirm Caraway’s account. He also noted that he and a 20-year-old daughter were born from previous relationships.

Sam Geanes could not be reached for comment Tuesday on the discrepancies.

“Wherever she’s at, she just needs to hold on and keep praying,” Caraway said. “I know she’s scared. I love her and I miss her. We all love her and miss her.”

Members of the Geaneses’ church, St. Paul A.M.E. in North Dallas, had scheduled a 7 p.m. Tuesday vigil for the missing woman at the church, 12230 Coit Road.

Police described Geanes as 5 feet, 4 inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes. Her husband said Geanes more recently wore her hair in thick braids with reddish cornrows on the side and wrapped in a bun on the top.

WFAA-TV’s Rebecca Lopez contributed to this report.

    SAR help

The United Response SAR team is located in the D/FW area and can probably help with the search if the family or law enforcement request them.

It doesn't look good. The husband can not accurately identify the number of marriages, number of children OR their ages. What is with this?? How long were the married?? Could their have been any financial motive? i.e. insurance policies, etc..

I don't know. They had the vigil last night and he had chest pains and they took him away in an ambulance. I might find this weird, but I know that African Americans can get pretty worked up in church and there was probably some heavy duty emotion running through that place. It seems that if he had something to do with it, he probably wouldn't have caught up with her between house cleaning jobs, but anything is possible. Her car was found in a high crime area. In fact, they talked about a woman being found behind a washer in an apartment complex laundry room. She was beat up real bad and was barely breathing. I was thinking it was probably her, but ended up being someone else. Just that type of area. I wouldn't stop there for any reason.

I'm originally from Dallas and remember this story from 2004. My parents live in Rowlett, just a stone's throw from where Shirley's remains were found.

I hope that forensics will enable the police to track down whoever killed this hard-working woman.

RIP Shirley, and my prayers go out to her friends and family.

Is Shirley's case officially listed as a homicide? There are a few reports about her remains being discovered but in all the ones I read, the cause of death was still undetermined. However, there was a big distance between where she was found and where her car was originally located. Based on this, LE was suspecting foul play and yet there doesn't appear to be a follow-up available.
