Man finds skull
http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/apparent-human-skull-found-891572.html

Unidentified info on NamUs
https://identifyus.org/cases/8642

wondering if this could be NamUs MP#470, Grongie Ward missing since 2004 from Atlanta.
https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/470/4/
size of shirt found seems realistic, and tag from pants found would be a brand of velour type jogging suit by ENYCE

Very new at this, so just beginning, but area is close. Looks like they already ruled someone out, but not Grongie Ward.
Anyone have any thoughts? Where do you even go with this?

I doubt Mr. Ward is the UID. Ward was supposedly 5'8" and the UID was about 6'1".

Brian Wehrle? Missing about 18 months from GA?

I think it's a pretty good match and that you should submit it. Often times the heights are off. Ward would be big enough to wear a 4xl shirt, he was wearing a gold watch when he disappeared, and it looks like his shirt in his photo may say "ENYCE". Not positive that it does and the label was from a pair of pants but if his shirt was ENYCE, then it's very likely he had other clothes of the same brand. Of course, lots of people probably wear that brand but I still think it's too strong of a coincidence not to check him out.

Although one has to wonder why they wouldn't already have checked him out as being the UID since he went missing from the Atlanta area. Of course, it is an awfully big area and a place where lots of people are missing so who knows. Too bad they don't have his dentals in Namus.

I emailed the investigator of the UID with the possible match. When I look at the area where Mr. Ward disappeared from to where remains were found, they are only 10 miles apart, straight up a major road. There is not much info on Mr. Ward's disappearance, but there is too much similarity for it not to at least be ruled out.
Weight of Grongie Ward was 280. A 4x shirt would fit that size and not too many of the other MPs from that area are of that weight. Skeletal height said "estimated" so there's only a slight difference there, and the gold watch shown is another similarity as Grongie was wearing a gold watch.

good luck with the submission.

for what it is worth, the UID was NOT wearing a gold watch. it was a Fossil watch with a blue face.

the close up of the watch doesn't look gold, I know, but there's another photo in NamUs of the watch and it was gold in that photo.

Heard back from ME office already.
"I think we have ruled him out, but I will check with investigations"

these two seem to fit the bill - Carlos K. Parker and James Martin, Jr.

Parker was 6'0" and 31 y.o. when last seen in Atlanta on Dec 6, 2006:

https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/8511/13/

Martin was 34, 6'2", last seen on March 1, 2001 in Cherokee County, GA:

https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/455/37/

Neither of these men seem like they would be big enough to wear a 4XL shirt, though. Even if the man went for the oversized look, a 4XL is pretty darn big. And the 30-40 estimated age range is a little old for that type of dress anyway.

They were 6' and 6'2" and 175-180 lbs. That is pretty thin! My son is 6'2" and 175 and looks like a bean pole. If he wears one of my DH's 2XL shirts he looks ridiculous. I can't imagine him in a 4XL.

If the height could be off by that much, Ward looks like a better match size wise. It says he wore a gold watch, and I'm trying to find that Fossil watch with a gold band. Not much luck. Of course, they could have stopped making that one.

I would think the size 11 shoes would really help narrow things down, but there aren't shoe sizes on a lot of these profiles.

I dont think the height and weight is allways gonna be a good fit with the size of the clothing most people wear clothes that are way to big anyways . you wouldnt think some of these guys would be buying jeans 10 sizes to big either untill you see them walkin around with the pants hanging half off thier a$$ .. Isn't fossil a pretty exspensive name bran also for a watch.

Just checked NamUs again and see that there are now like a hundred or more rule outs for this. I'm confused though, a lot of these rules outs are women. Is this right? I haven't seen so many rule outs listed before on a case.

https://identifyus.org/cases/8642

If they knew this was a male, why are they ruling out all females? Do you think they maybe don't know the sex? It's still listed as a male though.

beats me. 540 exclusions are impressive but most do not seem to be African American males.

They probably originally listed the UID as female, and subsequently changed it to male.

The system probably generated a list before the error was corrected. You can't un-generate the list, so they had to mark them as excluded

Has there been cases where rule outs were later determined to be the UID? I am still stuck on Grongie Ward for some reason and found an article on a lawsuit Grongie's family took out against the life insurance company. They claim he died on a certain day, but body has never been found. I assume a rule out is made on dental or DNA?
I am stuck on the shirt tag that size. That eliminates a lot of MPs due to not being that big.

Yes, I can think of two off the top of my head - both teenaged girls from Florida. Peggy Sue Houser (Tampa) and Colleen Orsborn (Daytona Beach). Both remained UID for nearly 30 years because of botched rule-outs.

Thanks Carl! Wow, how sad that is to think those families were left to wonder for all that time.

Robert Lee Mitchell? Not listed as a rule-out for the UID on NamUs. No age listed either by the Atlanta Police Department, NAMPN, or Charley Project. His height, race, and last known location are in-line with the UID's estimates. LKA year of 2008 fits in the probable years of death range for the UID of 2001 to 2008. 4XL shirt does seem too big for Mr. Mitchell's reported height and weight, but stranger things have happened.

From the APD Missing Persons page:

Robert Lee Mitchell

Height: 6'01
Weight:185

Eye Color: Brown

Report Narrative: The family of Mr. Robert L. Mitchell have reported him as missing. Mr. Mitchell was last known to be at Grady Hospital on or about June 28, 2008. Any information or contact, notify 911 or The Atlanta Police Department's Adult Missing Persons Squad.
